Inspired by my 'Top Ten Action Heroes' list from last year, I give you the Action Hero Draft, because this board NEEDS it. (I doubt anyone needs ideas, but here's my original list for reference. For the record, there are already things I would change about it, but that's how these lists go.) I had thought about expanding the list to a top 25 or even hundred, but that would require a lot of writing, even for me. I still haven't ruled it out. Anyway, I figure you guys can help me provide a kind of shorthand version (or is this longform in comparison?). I don't know, let's have some fun. The rules are simple: - Draft an actor/actress from movies or (television) to fill out your Action Heroes roster. You can use as little or as much explanation as you want, it's your draft pick. i.e., list key roles by the actor; write a sentence, a paragraph, an essay if you so desire. Or just type, "STALLONE," if you don't think further explanation is required. Like I said, it's your pick. They don't even necessarily have to be from a title traditionally considered to be an 'action' property. Tough guys and badasses abound in drama as well as comedy. - Wait for at least three other posters to pick or at least an hour between picks - Limit of three picks a day, otherwise Frogs will pull an all nighter and draft all of Hollywood while we sleep. There are no roster limits, build your stable as big as you want. I'm hoping eventually we'll have drafted everyone who ever threw a punch on screen. There's no real 'game' to be played, as I don't see a definitive winner ever being established. But the thread can obviously also be used to debate and compare each other's rosters as you go. I was tempted to go by movie characters, so everyone had the opportunity to have Arnie on their team, but I thought this method raised the stakes a little and would require more thought to be put into each choice. Rules clarifications. As mentioned previously in the thread, the new 'day' starts at 8:00 AM EST. New rules as discussed taking effect 1/28/21: - Increasing from 3 picks to 5 picks daily, starting today. Keep in mind the day goes until 8:00 AM EST tomorrow, even if you made your picks in the middle of last night. - Trades are allowed, but it's up to the individual posters. I originally ruled out trading draft picks on principle, but rethinking it, I guess it doesn't matter. There's no real draft 'order', you just have to wait three picks or an hour. For example, if one poster wanted to trade one (or more) of their daily picks to another poster for an actor already chosen, I don't see the harm in that. It's the same number of picks, just changing hands. Everyone still has an opportunity to draft. - Eventually we should come up with a system, categories for first team/second team/third team etc. on our rosters so it isn't just a big blob of names. Open to suggestions on the format for that. It doesn't accomplish anything, just gives more details to focus on. Since I created this exercise, I get the first pick. I could be selfish and take an obvious one (someone from my top ten), but I don't want to ruin anyone's fun right off the bat. Hey, I'm a giver. So without further ado, I'll go outside the box and take a master thespian with a sneaky good 'actionish' resume: Daniel Day-Lewis Key roles: Hawkeye (Nathaniel Poe) from Last of the Mohicans (1992) Bill 'The Butcher' Cutting from Gangs of New York (2002) Danny Flynn from The Boxer (1997)

Just for the fuck of it I'll go with a more modern guy and say Hugh Jackman.
One of the great stars of musical theater is also a fucking hulking body builder and great tough guy screen presence. He's cool and charming enough to play James Bond, Indiana Jones, or Superman but found his niche as Wolverine, the mysterious, hard edged, rough tough guy. Even when those movies were bad he sold the shit out of it, and even brought some of that charm and rugged quality to shitty action movies like Australia and Van Helsing. Those movies suck, but they couldn't have asked for a better lead.

I find myself surprised that Jackman does not in fact have retractable adamantium claws. Would have made The Greatest Showman more interesting if he did.

Tom Hardy. Between Warrior and Dark Knight Rises, nobody is topping him without super powers. Plus, he's the new James Bond.

I’m sticking with old school and taking the IRS’s favorite movie star, Wesley Snipes. Love that first Blade.

Again I'm going to give others a chance by staying away from my own top ten (for now).
How about another guy who, despite playing of one of the most iconic heroes of all time, isn't really known as an action star-- but his résumé suggests otherwise:
Christian Bale
Batman in The Dark Knight Trilogy 2005-2012
John Preston in Equilibrium (2002)
John Connor in Terminator: Salvation (2009) Yes, it sucked
Melvin Purvis in Public Enemies (2009)
Dan Evans in 3:10 To Yuma (2007)
Quinn Abercromby in Reign of Fire (2002) Yes, this also sucked
I could also throw in
Patrick Bateman in American Psycho (2000) It's a thriller and a dark comedy, but he kills some people (or does he?)

Ya know, as bad as every Terminator entry has been since the first 2 entries, at least Salvation tried something a little different. It didn't really work for a bunch of reasons, but every single other movie essentially follows the same story arc.

Per the above - it states 3 picks per day
My Wednesday picks are done
So I'm assuming my new day begins at 12:01am - i.e. about 11 hours from now?
I typically wake up around 3am

"We're gonna have a window..." The look, the voice...he was really, really going for it in that flick.

I knew you would ask this question! Let's say the new 'day' begins at 8:00 AM EST. That way nobody is hogging all the picks overnight. Personally I think the game is much more fun in quasi-real time, when we're all alternating picks off and on all day. Logging on to see someone made three picks in a row overnight sucks a lot of the fun out of the process. 8:00 AM seems like enough time for people to get their day going. Also I like your idea of updating your posts with your full roster as you go, we should all adopt that detail once we get onto page 2 and beyond. It'll make it easier for people to keep track of who's already taken.

I like Tom Hardy as an actor, but among the many issues with The Dark Knight Rises was trying to make Tom Hardy look tall. Yeah, but that's unique to him. He's 5'9", so not short by any stretch, but not exactly tall. Tom Cruise is 5'7" and it's hilarious when he's in scenes with Nicole Kidman. Plus, Arnold is 6'2", which is certainly a good height, but in Terminator, they make him look 7 feet tall.
