I bet if the modern script was shown to actors in the 60s they would find it incomprehensible and maybe embarrassing.
Beyond the obvious like the young black cop, Edgar the farmer depiction would not be well received in markets the movie would be shown in.
It would have to be so different. Even Agent K having regrets about being an agent, that would not be in there.
Anyway I am thinking
Agent K - Stephen Boyd
Agent J- Sal Mineo (I'd go with a black actor but I cant think of anyone young enough who would be the smart alec at the time-this version would not be so comical)
Zed - Oskar Homolka (actually I dont want to repeat others but Walter Matthau could be this role)
Laurel Weaver - Diane Muldaur
Edgar - Joe Don Baker (a little young but why not)

I watched the Caper of the Golden Bulls and The Oscar recently and he could definitely play the part of K.

Hey I never heard Caper of the Golden Bulls--I'll have to check it out.. It's one of the numerous heist films made in Europe during the period. It's a pretty good one and has a bit of a surprise ending. Boyd is in his element.

Definitely not Sinatra as Agent K. He'd be too drunk and break out laughing or need several retakes.
And not Jayne Mansfield for Laurel Weaver. She's a serious doctor, kind of nerdy. Not a squealing sex pot.
Art Carney can do a flat affect when he wants to. He'd be a great Agent K. We need a Robert De Niro type. Maybe Jack Webb?
Peter Lorre would be an interesting Jeebs.
Peter Boyle as Edgar Bugg?
Charles Laughton or Raymond Burr or Eddie Albert as Zed?
Karen Black or Genevieve Bujold or Barbara Feldon as Laurel Weaver?
Margaret Hamilton as Beatrice, Edgar's wife
John Astin or Donald O'Connor or Terry-Thomas as Agent J ?
