January 28th marks the 35th anniversary of the space shuttle Challenger explosion. This was the space shuttle that exploded on live TV due to a faulty O-ring seal just 73 seconds after lift off. Any of you remember this?

"We have had a major malfunction."
I cant remember if we watched it as it was happening. I know it was shown in class-but maybe not ours. I think someone came in and said the shuttle exploded. Another class was watching it.

73 seconds. That's just so haunting to think about.

I remember it well but i don't think i watched the launch live. Not long ago i read a really long article about it and a long section of it detailed what the crew went through. The cockpit survived the explosion and was separated from the rest of the shuttle and tumbled through a long ark before smashing back to earth. They think the crew were alive for quite a bit after the explosion because control and switch positions suggest the pilot tried to regain control which obviously didn't work. I can't imagine what it would have been like to be in their shoes and it gives me goosebumps thinking about it.
