he Disappearance of Sung-joo Kim
On June 15, 2000, around 2:00 p.m., Sung-joo Kim, a second-year student at the time, went missing in front of Dong Elementary School in Gyochon Village, Jeollanam Province, South Korea. She normally waited for her brother who was a year older than her after school so they could walk home together. However, on that day classes for younger students ended earlier than usual, so Sung-joo waited for him in front of the local convenience store. Between 2:30 p.m. and 2:50 p.m., she was seen by her friends standing there by herself. Although a short-while later when her teacher passed by at 3 p.m, Sung- joo was no longer in front of the convenience store. A witness later came forward and said that they saw her around 3:10 p.m. with three unidentified males in front of a supermarket. The group was traveling toward another village in the opposite direction of her house. After her brother ended classes and could not find her he alerted their parents and Sung-joo was reported missing.
At around 4am on June 16th, a phone call was made to her family who had been awake all night waiting for news regarding their daughter. When they picked up the phone they were met with silence on the line and the caller soon hung up. Feeling a bit off, Sung- joo's father went outside and noticed there was a strange car parked in front of their home. However, when he began to approach the vehicle the driver sped off in a hurry. It is still unknown who the driver of the vehicle was till this day. Due to a lack of leads, a composite sketch was drafted from the description of the men the witness claimed to see Sung-joo with that day. Additionally, the entire village was searched with over 1,400 vehicles being stopped and inspected in the weeks following her disappearance, but it was to no avail.
At the time of her disappearance, Sung-joo was described as a shy child who had a hard time talking to strangers due to a slight speech impediment. Her mother is still advocating for her daughters case and has kept the letters written to Sung-joo by her friends unopened in hopes that she will read them herself someday.
The Disappearance of Ha-eun Kim (The two are not from the same family)
Almost an exact year after the disappearance of Sung-joo Kim, a first-year student named Ha-eun Kim at Gangjin Central Elementary School in Pyeongdong Village, Jeollanam-do, South Korea, disappeared near the entrance of Gangjin St. Joseph Girls' High School after school. The day of her disappearance, Ha-eun and her classmate walked home from school together per usual. Her classmate's home was on the opposite side of the crosswalk, and Ha-eun's was 3 minutes from the crosswalk. The classmate said he saw her cross and nothing seemed to be unusual about how she was acting. When Ha-eun didn't come home, her parents reached out to the local police for help and she was reported as missing.
In the days following her disappearance, police questioned the entire 721 students at St. Joseph's Girls' High School, which was holding a field day at the time but none of the students saw Ha-eun. Additionally, they questioned residents who lived along the route she took home from school. Though the majority of the area was canvased police were unfortunately unable to find any trace of Ha-eun.
A few months after her disappearance, a post was written from a computer room in Suncheon City by an unidentified person. They claimed that they saw someone who resembled Ha-eun in Busan, South Korea with two men but did not report it to the police because they were unsure if it was really her. Because computer rooms in Korea are public spaces police were never able to track down this person and question them.
My Theory + Case Updates
In 2008, a man known as "A" was indicted on charges of filming himself abusing a young boy who lived in the same village as the two missing children. However, because of the statute of limitations South Korea places on cases the charges were later dropped. Supposedly, "A" joined the military in July of 2000 shortly after the disappearance of Sung-joo Kim, and was released a few months before Ha-eun Kim's disappearance in 2001. His army records state that he suffered from mental illness such as hallucinations and was deemed not fit to serve any longer. Oddly, after his release he wrote a letter to a friend stating that "he committed a crime and he would not have done it had he not been born," but the letter was later rationalized to be in regard to the male child mentioned earlier. Although, many believe it could be a letter in reference to Sung-joo Kim. Because of the lack of evidence of "A" ever coming into contact with the missing children, the police were not able to formally indict him on him any charges.
On February 8th, 2019, an episode of a popular TV program Curious Story Y aired the story of a man named "Na" who was serving time in prison for brutally murdering his brother in-law. He wrote in to the producers for help regarding his relationship with a handicapped woman. However, this instead led to the program investigating the reasoning behind him committing murder rather than the original problem he solicited their help for solving.
According to their findings, the reason Na murdered his brother in-law is not clear but it is believed to have been related to a video tape found by Na's ex-wife while cleaning their house. The wife who thought it was a regular VHS tape played it and found footage of Na beating a young female child who was chained up in a dark room. She claimed that the child in the video resembled a poster of one of the missing children who vanished years ago. However, because Na's ex-wife was intellectually challenged police were unable to show pictures of the missing children in order for it not to be labeled as coercion. Coincidentally, the physical description she gave was almost exactly to that of one of the missing elementary students (which one it was is unknown)...
After the episode aired, a man by name the of "Min-soo" came forward and said that he and Ha-eun Kim were classmates around the time of her disappearance. He claimed that "Na" had lured him into his home and sexually assaulted him in his living room. Min-soo also claimed that video was taken of the act being committed in that same area of the house, but the ex-wife of Na claims that the video she played was filmed in a location she didn't recognize. The police seized and searched Na's home after the series aired but were unable to find any clues to substantiate the claims of his ex-wife or Min-soo. However, they did find various journals with odd writings and admissions of his interest in the production of pornography.
In the end, Na was indicted on charges of imprisonment, rape, and intimidation. But it is impossible to charge him with the abduction of the missing elementary students without any kind of significant evidence.
Which suspect do you guys think is guilty? Is it A or Na?
I personally think that is was Na but without evidence there is little to no way of proving it. It also could be "A" who had abducted and assaulted a child once before and was in the area at the time of the students disappearance. Also, he did write a weird note that admitted he committed some kind of crime...
