Saw a post about him here. I just don't understand why he did it. Money, fame, success, good wife.
Why the hell would someone with all that commit suicide?

He had Lewy Body Dementia. That's a devastating diagnosis. Did not his wife and friends not see this? And if they did why not try to get him help? They knew about the Parkinson's and dementia, but there was no way to know he was going to commit suicide if he didn't warn anyone.

Did the public know about his Parkinson's and dementia before he died? Or did his media keep that a secret?

Mental and physical illness, I suppose he refused sympathy, his choice.
Good Morning Vietnam and Good Will Hunting stand out for me, but all his film, TV and standup was outstanding.

They knew about the Parkinson's and dementia, but there was no way to know he was going to commit suicide if he didn't warn anyone. Did the public know about his Parkinson's and dementia before he died? Or did his media keep that a secret? Media didn't know. I'm sure the idea of ending up drooling and in a diaper in the next 5 years with the whole world watching was more than he could handle. It's not like the tabloid rags would have respected his privacy. Just really sad all the way around. He did so much for people that he never talked about. He and Christopher Reeves were college room mates and best friends before either were famous. After CR's accident RW showed up at the hospital dressed like a doctor and got him to laugh. He also paid all of his medical bills.

Thank you for posting that, I knew he had an illness but not the name of it, or nature of it. So sad, that he didn't know, really, what his illness was. I lost my husband to a terminal illness, but at least we knew the cause and understood the various potential scenarios. His widow will probably never fully recover; I know I never did.

I remember reading about the illness he was diagnosed with. I don't recall the exact details right now, but it was definitely horrifying. I understand why he did what he did, tragic though it was.

I understand as well, and sadly I think if the option of Death With Dignity was an available option and not looked at as something so horrific, people could make choices when in these situations under more peaceful conditions with their families involvement. Just like people who are dying of cancer, slow and painful deaths, they should be allowed to leave on their own terms, with dignity. People seem to forget quality of life and focus only on length of life. While he was in his right might and was aware things were deteriorating, a plan could have been drawn up with his wife and kids to explain what was happening. I believe people have a right to make their own choices, especially when facing these horrible conditions.

And I agree you can have money, fame, success and a good wife but if you have bad health you got nothing.

If you have everything and you're still sad, there's no hope. This is why any rich and famous person kills themselves. Atleast if you have nothing there's hope you'll feel happy if you get money, success, good wife, fame or whatever.

He was literally losing his mind. I think I might have done the same thing he did, under those circumstances.

Made me think of this verse from the Conor Oberst song "A Little Uncanny":
"I miss Christopher Hitchens, I miss Oliver Sacks
I miss poor Robin Williams, I miss Sylvia Plath
Every morning's a desert, every night is a flood
They say a party can kill you, well sometimes I wish it would"

Death is part of life, but the thought of suffering a slow, painful death or witnessing a loved one experiencing the same disturbs me greatly.
