Watched this yesterday and mostly enjoyed it. Not as bad as I was expecting.
The first 30 minutes are really great. Spielberg is at the top of his game creating a mysterious, fairy tale-like atmosphere. Everything in London with Wendy is sensational.
Then it gets to Neverland and has some issues. The humor gets a little too silly imo and Julia Roberts as Tinker Bell is awful.
Also - while he's not bad - Hoffman as Captain Hook feels like a miscast.
All in all, I think it's an enjoyable movie that I wish took itself a little more seriously.
Thoughts on this movie?

I hated Julia Roberts in this. I liked Hoffman. I agree it could have taken its self more seriously, that's a good take.
I wish they would have cast someone younger for Tinkerbell, and she shouldn't have spoke just like in the original.

Huge childhood favorite, that often were sent on New Years eve in the 90s, but one that sadly did not quite live up the sweet nostalgia and fond memories. Still, last time I re-visited it, I ended up with a kind 6/10. Might have to re-watch it again some day. But highly doubt it might climb above the rating I gave it last time.
Hoffman and Hoskins were great, though.

Tim Curry should have been Captain Hook.

It’s fine. Some of the kids are annoying;namely the daughter. But I always liked it.

Tim Curry should have been Captain Hook. He’d be very similar to Hoffman imo. I’d rather have seen a tough, even more hammy performance. Hoffman was kind of playing it like he was in a stage play, but I’d have rather it be a little closer to the animated adaptation with some more grit.

Didn’t Isaacs play Hook in a movie? Or am I stuck in some Mandela Effect?

I agree. The first act is perfect.
The problem is, Spielberg went too far into the “kiddie” realm in Neverland.
It is said, Tom Hanks was originally his choice for Pan. But Hanks was filming “A League of their Own” and the schedules overlapped.
And honestly, I love Robin Williams, but Hanks would have been better. Could you imagine (in Hanks voice) lines like "What is this? Lord of the Flies preschool?"
I’d have cast someone like a 1991 Meg Ryan as Tink.
And Tim Curry as Hook, but Hoffman works fine honestly.
And like someone else mentioned, he went too far “G” in Hook. In the second and third act, he should have made it more even toned or some seriousness. It went too “Rated G”

Even when a kid, I didn’t like it.

I like it, but it definitely has writing issues in the second half. I agree that it gets a bit too silly sometimes it also is aimless in some places.
I don't mind Julia Roberts in it and Dustin Hoffman and Robin Williams are awesome in it, though all 3 are miscast to some extent.
What really makes the movie is the technical aspects though and the energy of it all. One of John Williams's best scores and the creation of Neverland is great. Robin Williams arc is handled well too.
7/10

I found it to be very annoying when I saw it at the cinema and haven’t watched it since. I was in my early 30s at the time though so probably not in the target audience.

Dustin Hoffman as Hook is the only memorable thing about the movie. All of Robin Williams's films are dull.

But Tom Hanks as Pan would have been better. I would’ve preferred someone a little more believable as an action hero. As cliche as it sounds, someone like Tom Cruise or Johnny Depp would’ve been good. Acting chops to pull off the early stuff, but physical and comedic enough for the later action/screwball elements. If they really wanted to get wild, maybe even Mel Gibson. Sounds ridiculous at first, but he’s proven himself in action-comedies and as an all around stellar dramatic actor. Then again, not sure Spielberg and Gibson would get along too well...
