Something must be working well for us to get emotional over an alien puppet.

I don't think it is as great as it is made out to be by some people, but it is an excellent movie. Beautifully made and creative and emotional story-telling.

It was wildly hyped up in the 80s but did poorly on re-release in 2002.
Are they still selling ET toys?

I don't think it is as great as it is made out to be by some people, but it is an excellent movie. Beautifully made and creative and emotional story-telling. There seems to be an interesting debate going between various people... It's great, or, it's over-rated... Now, while there may be some exceptions... I've begun to wonder if... Those of us who love the movie, saw the film, back in the early 1980s... and... those who don't care for it, have only recently seen it... Back in the 1980s, this was THE film. Not many other films measured up to it... So of course we found it incredible. And when we watch it, nostalgia kicks in... But, for the younger generation, who have many newer movies to compare it to, is it really that great for them? It's hard for most of us older fans to understand why so many others don't like the film... And the only conclusion that I can come up, it must be a generational thing... However, as I noted, there are some exceptions... Even back in the early 1980s, many people didn't like the STAR WARS films, and still don't today... So, the idea that people didn't like E.T. back then, is just as likely... However, I am at a loss to understand why they didn't like these films back then, because everyone that I knew was talking about all of these films, and loved them... and so their reasoning, remains a mystery to me. There is nothing wrong with not liking E.T., but, I feel sorry for anyone that doesn't... Because it is one of my all time favorite films, and in my opinion, it certainly earned it's reputation of being one of the greatest films of all time, at least, back in the day...

Usually I hear the usual Spielberg complaint when it comes to E.T. That it is oversentimental and manipulative. I saw the movie as a child back in the late 1980s.

Well made family film, but 25th greatest American movie of all time? Should have won Best Picture? He gets drunk and talks funny and it's kinda sad when he leaves and humans are the real bad guys and kids are cute and family unity is great and buy Reese's Pieces because they're even greater and daddy issues but also Jesus ironically. That's all well and good, but I've just never been extremely moved by or attached to it.
My apathy might be in part because I grew up more with movies inspired by it (T2, Free Willy, The Iron Giant).

It’s great, but to an extent. Isn’t even the best sci-fi film of 82, anyway.

It deserved Best Picture over the the typical epic biography Gandhi imo. Good movie, but nothing all that unique or memorable besides Ben Kingsley's performance. The movie is in part a Jesus analogy, but you don't have to watch it that way. Speaking of the Jesus comparison, I wouldn't say humans are presented as the bad guys, just the government. The real best movie of 1982 didn't even get a nomination.
