I’d say “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” (2011) I don't know if "failure" is the right term, since it did get 2 Oscar nominations (one of them being Best Picture). I meant failure in the sense it was terrible and not what they were going for.

Is Forest Gump meant to be an Oscar bait film? It was a big summer release

Is Forest Gump meant to be an Oscar bait film? It was a big summer release It certainly ticked some Oscar buttons at the time. AIDs, intellectual disability, Vietnam, etc.

Forrest Gump won Best Picture, so calling it a “failure” is objectively false.

Big budget flop appropriately title The Oscar (1966).
In the wake of the success of Big Musicals “My Fair Lady” and “The Sound Of Music”, struggling studios rushed similar product into production with disastrous financial results. They had major stars and major budgets but major hubris brought down some major studios.
Star (1968) Doctor Dolittle (1969) Darling Lili (1970) On A Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970)

While I don't have any bad memories of it, it did really come off as a way for Cuba Gooding, Jr. to try and keep his star power up.

Anyone remember that forgetable film "The Soloist" with Robert Downey Jr? Was it really trying to be Oscar bait? I just remember it being marketed as an uplifting, low-key movie for the coming summer movie season.

Also, very convincing effects too. On paper, Forrest Gump shouldn’t work. If you get the wrong actor to play Forrest, it could have been corny in the wrong places and over dramatic in others. Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks together pulled this off. Great supporting cast, don’t get me wrong. But if Forrest goes too handicapped, or not enough... if he doesn’t do funny aloof the right way. Dramatic crying convincingly... it doesn’t work. And Zemeckis did a great job of building your sympathy. Then you can play with the character. It’s a masterpiece in cinema imho. The music score, the cinematography, the plot, the humanity. The allegory. It’s perfect.

Modern Oscar bait is movies with a black lead that has a big focus on race in the story.

That's how he answers replies to his MAGA posts over to the Politics board. Oh, I've seen him write despicable things in the past. However, there didn't seem to be anything political, religious, etc. about his post nor mine, so I wasn't expecting him to reply that way.
