And in college, I studied art history (Italian Renaissance and Far Eastern) and saw pictures of the atrocities committed in the name of religion. Not just Christianity, in Hinduism, Islam, etc. Wars fought over whose invisible friend is the correct invisible friend. From my perspective, it has caused more damage than good.
I am an agnostic atheist, yet I still perform acts of charity, and have so much respect for life that I don't eat meat, and I bottle-feed tiny abandoned motherless kittens until they are old enough to be adopted. I have volunteered my entire adult life to help others less fortunate than myself, and those who are abused or abandoned, and it had nothing to do with god, but with the simple ethics of the Golden Rule.
I'm not 'butthurt', I just base my life on facts rather than faith.
But you are speaking of problems related to humanity and power - not just religion. Atheist systems like Communism and fascism have been just as brutal and committed countless atrocities.
Few wars in history have been motivated by religion. Did the Roman Empire conquer the known world for Jupiter? No, for all practical purposes the Romans were irreligious. Genghis Khan killed millions without any reference to god. The power of the elite which oppresses the poor has never been based on religion. Religion is just often used as an excuse to cover their inherent human greed.
I also grew up gay in a homophobic world. So yeah, I was "damaged" by Leviticus. But it's interesting to note that there is plenty of homophobia among people who could care less about god. Is all the gay bashing and hate against gays in our society carried out by theists? No, those people are not church goers, I guarantee you. The atheists in China throw homosexuals in concentration camps.
Atheism in and of itself is not a system of any kind. It is the absence of a system. Communism is a political ideology that says religion is used to keep people from fighting for social justice as religion explains human suffering as a necessary part of salvation. Fascism is not an atheistic ideology.
Many, many wars have been started over religion. I believe 6 million Jews were the target during the last World War. Roman still persecuted any group that did not pay tribute to Roman Temples. Khan was a pagan and they tended to at least respect the gods of cultures. The power elite in Europe used the Divine Right of Kings as their authority to rule and their pagan forbearers could trace their "lineage" to back to Odin and the Gods. And religion is very much used not only as a cover, but a method to increase wealth.
