Killing Kirk was terrible. And how they did it. They should have put Shatner into the Star Trek 9 movie so he and Nimoy had one final appearance together. I would have seen it if they had. This is way more satisfying for a Kirk final appearance: JJ Abrams said that it would have been infeasible to have Shatner show up the 2009 film because we actually saw his character die onscreen. I kind of get where he's coming from, but I do think there could have been a way to do it without making it seem outlandish or far-fetched.

They could have done it. Either as a dream sequence or a hologram or whatever.
That reminds me though- the energy ribbon thing supposedly left a copy of the person in it-so technically Kirk is still in there. Actually that is what is really stupid about this film--how do we really know Picard left the energy ribbon? Maybe him wanting to go back to the planet was his big wish and he was just doing that inside the ribbon. How could he get out of it and change time?
They didnt handle Kirk's personality well. The dog showing up. It's too bad they just didnt end the original with ST 6. And they were forced into retirement. Paramount didnt want to pay the NG people more money for another season and so they just said-screw it-we'll put them into the feature films. And they aren't good enough for feature films. The cast is not interesting enough.
That's why most of the films are awful-because the cast was never that interesting. Only Picard and Data and Worf have a lot of personality. The original cast--they could give all of them their own scenes--Chekov etc.. It's bland with the NG cast.
That's why it became the Picard Data show...
And they changed Picard into a bad ass in First Contact. His personality totally changed.

Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
Star Trek Generations (1994) - 3 out of 4 stars
"The old guard gives way to the new, as Capt. Kirk (Shatner) passes the baton to a new Starfleet commander, Capt. Picard (Stewart). Episodic adventure yarn plays like an elongated segment of the Next Generation TV series; not inspired, perhaps, but entertaining just the same, with some impressive special effects. Oddly enough, the weakest segment is the climactic teaming of Picard and Kirk, which seems like a leftover from an old Saturday matinee serial. Whoopi Goldbderg appears unbilled as Guinan."

He's kinda right about the climax seeming like something from a Saturday matinee serial.

It’s crazy to think that movie will most likely be the last time Shatner will ever play Kirk.

It is my favorite of TNG movies, but I still dislike it.

Great retro-adventure movie ! But I think to put Leonard Nimoy in the nustyle Star Trek was a big mistake , even though I was excited again to see Leonard back in action again . And sadly now to see playboy Chris Pine as a burnt-out young William Shatner . I should say , there are a number of great novels on Kirk being brought back to life after his death , and the exploration of that.

One of two Next Generation movies that I really enjoy.
It's a nice looking film with good cinematography, a gorgeous soundtrack and some quality action sequences - most notably the crash-landing of the Enterprise-D.
Shatner, Stewart and McDowall all provide strong performances and Brent Spiner is at his most delightful as a Data struggling to come to terms with human emotions.
As regards the plot, I liked the concept of the Nexus. Yes, there are some obvious plot holes and Kirk's death was a tad underwhelming, but overall I think the good far outweighs the bad.
My second favourite science fiction movie of 1994 after Stargate.
My rating = 9/10
