Said he made the decision in November, would not comment further. So no one noticed until the Athletic did this week.
Silver had given teams the option this year.

Seems like something that can blow up in your face ten different ways. One side will decide you're unamerican, the other side will think you're trying to circumvent their protest.

Seems like it's just kind of an interesting little experiment to see if anyone would even notice. If people get upset now, at this point, for whatever reason, that's kinda funny.

There’s shouldn’t be a national anthem before every sporting event in America. Maybe that’s a hot take I don’t know. I’ve always felt it was a waste of time. It doesn’t make me any less American to not care about a song played before a basketball game.
The Olympics, yes. All local US sports, no.

There's only the national anthem at internationals, and the FA Cup final... Not for domestic sport, thank God, I couldn't stand it if they did.

Thats dumb that they are now forced to do so. I never got why the anthem was played before sporting events to begin with. Unless its like the World Cup or the Olympics why is it there? The NFL is so wrapped up in its military relationship that it wastes money for pointless jet fly overs. It seemed to cause an uproar but from my knowledge I think 75% of the people complaining about it don't really care. They just want to bitch about something and try and turn it into a patriotic competition.

Yeah, eventually it should just be involving national team sports. Does the NPB baseball league in Japan have anthems? Does Premier League football?

I'm not a huge Cuban fan, but I kinda agree with him here. You want to end the controversy surrounding the National Anthem and professional sports? Just stop plaything the anthem. I never really understood why they played it anyways. It's not like they play it at concerts or movies. What's so important it about playing it before a sporting event?

I'm going the other way on this one. I think patriotism is vital in the US because the country is so huge and so diverse. We've been ripped apart by civil war in the past, and in many ways seem poised to do so in one way or another again. The anthem, the flag, the pride we have in 'being American' is easily misconstrued as vanity or jingoism when it should instead be seen as a reminder that we're all on the same team.
As someone who greatly values American ideals (but doesn't see them as separate from basic human ideals put into practice at a government level), I enjoy hearing the anthem at sporting events. To me it's a positive influence on our culture in ways people don't think about for reasons I previously explained. I understand how it's problematic for some, and I wouldn't be personally offended if they stopped playing the anthem altogether at sporting events. But I would be concerned about the long term effects of increased tribalism within our own nation if not for small reminders of E Pluribus Unum, like the anthem being a part of our everyday lives.

How about we keep the anthem but we permanently scrap God Bless America from sports.

The anthem shouldn’t be played before sporting events - if you want to keep politics out of sports, don’t play the anthem. The anthem has been hijacked by the right wing and the military industrial complex, as shown by how there are massive military displays during the anthem at NFL games, and support for the anthem now means support for America’s wars and America’s military and police. The anthem isn’t about celebrating America, it’s about celebrating the military and the police. While I love the American people and many things about America are great, I do not support the wars that we fight nor do I like the police very much, so the anthem and it’s militaristic displays make me uncomfortable.

And in the NHL (National?) where there are about as many players from outside North America as there are from the United States, and many more from Canada than the United States. Yet if the game does not involve a Canadian-based team (or Buffalo), only the US national anthem is played.

They play O Canada at Sabres games, even if they aren't playing a Canadian team? Apparently. There are three United States to Canada border crossings in the Niagara Falls area, all within 28 miles (45 kilometers) of Buffalo, New York. The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge crossings are among the busiest of all Canadian border crossings.
