As a kid, growing up in the early 90s, was quite a great time for watching cartoons on tv during the weekends. As not only were we kids blessed with having the more action fueled hit shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (in Norway it was changed from ninja, to hero, which I believe also happened in several other european countries at that time), Transformers, James Bond Jr., Bikermice From Mars, and then the many classic Hanna Barbera shows, such as The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, The Jetsons, Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines and probably a whole lot more, which I do not remember as of right now.
However, the real gem during late fridays eve and then followed by sunday mornings, where the Disney Hour (or Disneytimen) would show 2 half hour episodes of shows like Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Gooftroop, Chip 'n Dale's Rescue Rangers and Tale Spin, among some of the series which would switch from time to time. Between them two longer episodes, there would be short classic animated films, from the older days of Pluto, Mickey, Donald and Goofy.
As a big bonus for us kids in Norway, they used to send the show during late fridays afternoon, and on swedish television they would send it around the same time, but only on saturday. So if one missed out on all the fun from friday, the norwegian main channel would send reruns during sunday morning. So we had 3 days to look forward to, and barely missed out of any episodes.
The sad thing, was of course that sometimes the real great ones, such as DuckTales, New Adventures of Winnie The Pooh and Chip 'n Dale's Rescue Rangers got switched with what I believe, even as a kid, were not that great and in fact kind of annoying new shows, and where it felt like the classic days, were all gone, when Disney just seemed to focus on short lived animated series, based on their recent hit films, such as Aladdin, The Lion King and several others, and when Quack Pack arrived in 1996, I lost completely interest. The charm and often witty and sweet stories and characters, were now getting replaced by one hyperactive and loud "joke", after another. Sure, fun for those who enjoyed it, but for me, the Disney animated shows from the late 80s and into the early 90s, where quite something to behold, and I have tried to pick up as much of them on DVD as I can, but sadly, still several would probably never get to see a complete and official DVD set. And such a shame, as some of the music, script, voice talents, stories, animation were at times stunning, but thankfully many of these episodes and shows are still to find on Youtube or similar sites.

One of the very first episodes I can remember, turned out to be also the first episode of New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, which was the fantastic horror-themed episode:
Pooh Oughta Be in Pictures (1988)
This was one of the funniest and sweetest episodes I can remember from that show, and where the music and animation sure provided lots of classic moments and made me fell in love with the show from the very first go.

Such a nostalgic ride to look back on with a big smile, and still even know, all these years later on, this beautiful theme song still is able of delivering that sweet and bubbly feeling inside, to capture a more innocent time, and all within less than a minute of the outro.

I actually didn't watch as much of the Disney Afternoon shows as others of my generation. I think Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers was my favorite back then. Now though, having actually watched Darkwing Duck, that's probably definitively the best Disney show to come from that time.

Gargoyles was a big one for me. I've heard it was made specifically to capitalize off the popularity of Batman: TAS with its darker, grittier, gothic tone but no faulting it for that because I think it was in some ways better. It was literally Shakespearean which blows my mind to this day. It was a show aimed at kids but you had highly complex characters, sympathetic three-dimensional villains, and even a bit of murder and intrigue. As quaint as it is nowadays, it was the first cartoon where I remember hearing a "swear" when Xanatos says "hell" in the first episode. It was surprisingly adult in its themes and presentation. I'm not sure if it would hold up as well as an adult but for the time, there was nothing like it. Well, except Batman.

Now though, having actually watched Darkwing Duck, that's probably definitively the best Disney show to come from that time. I remember I was so happy when picking up the first two volumes of Darkwing Duck on DVD back in summer of 2007, sadly a volume 3 is most likely never gonna happen, but at least most of the episodes are been given an official release. This seems to be kind of a "trend" for Disney, where also a few other of the late 80s and early 90s animated shows, got 2 volumes put out, but somehow they never bothered to bring out a third and final DVD. Sadly, I guess a part of it, is because they did not sell as much, but I feel the attention/promotion were not all that impressive, like they could not care much for these once classic TV shows, who gave so much joy and fun to kids back then. Yeah, Darkwing Duck was a really fun and action filled show, I guess kind of a "spin-off" from DuckTales, if so, surely one of the more successful animated ones. As a kid, I loved Darkwing and his secret hidehout above the bridge, it looked so damn cool, even if I have always been a little anxious about certain heights. I liked how the show introduced so many memorable and funny villains, but also came with a few heart warming and sweet moments, and is probably in my top 3 of the best Disney shows from that era.

Damn, I would surely been glued to the TV screen, if that show was sent during the early 90s, at least in Norway. As I am sure that sadly never happened, with a few other shows that actually at times were included in the opening theme song, but I guess maybe the scandinavian Disneyhour version did not own the rights to show certain shows, that went on in the american version. Still, Gargoyles looked very impressive in style and would surely have been another hit with the younger audience, if it was given a chance. Thanks for bringing it up , as I might just have to put the show in my watchlist for tv-shows of the 80s and 90s.

My favorite Disney animated series growing up in the 80s and 90s was this one. Yeah i remember Disneytime i used to watch it. Oh yeah, Bompibjørnene, dæven I almost forgot about that one. We sure were truly blessed, or kind of spoilt, with having all these classic animated shows. I actually picked up a DVD, containing 30-40 episodes of that show, but have yet to re-watch it.

My current favorites: Aladdin and Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (currently watching the latter on Disney+). I remember being very angry, that there were not just one, but several Disney channels during the mid 00s, and all they seemed to focus on, was Hannah Montana and all these terribe live action sitcoms, with the most fake and annyoing (every other 5 seconds) laughter, and with almost none attention given to their animated classic shows. And if that was to happen, it would mostly be sent in the middle of the night, or at times where you just could not see it, and I think even I for a short period had 2-3 Disney channels, and still nothing of interest to watch all day long. Might have been some changes for the better, I hope, in recent years.

Yup, that's the one I got as well. Not sure if Disney ever released another volume after that first one, but it is the only one of the Gummi Bears DVD box sets, that I have seen on DVD as of yet.

My #1 favorite is Adventures of the Gummi Bears followed by TaleSpin. I had the NES TaleSpin game too which was very fun.
Other top favorites are: DuckTales The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh Darkwing Duck Recess
and one that pretty much everyone else in the world has forgotten about, The Wuzzles. I enjoyed it a lot and looked forward to it every Saturday morning and when it disappeared I wondered why it would be cancelled. It did not last long at all.
I thought it was great and I remember seeing stuffed toys of them in the stores. So I thought it was a fairly popular show, but it wasn't.
I would watch Aladdin, Gargoyles, The Little Mermaid and Mighty Ducks sometimes if there was nothing else good on but they are by no means favorites.
I was impressed with Gargoyles character devolpment and writing though. By the end the main bad guy, I forget his name, Zanatos or something had become a good guy and was an ally of Goliath and crew.
I hated Goof Troop and that Bobcat show.

I had forgotten about Recess, I think that one was a bit later on, but it was often showed on Disney Channel during the mid 00s, and I think also they made a movie, that I rated rather highly as well. Never heard of the Wuzzles, but I guess it went in the same way as Gargoyles, two shows that maybe the norwegian/swedish tv channels had the rights, to send and we might have missed out on lots of fun. I guess those shows might be lying around on Youtube, or similar sites, so one can look them up, for a few episodes. Yeah, Gooftroop, even though one of my favorites from the early 90s, did feel a bit like a downer, especially later on, when revisiting it once more, at least compared to most of what Disney had already delivered. The whole hyperactive/crazy slapstick and sitcom routine did end up more annoying and tiredsome, but sure, a few episodes still had held up, but trying to go through the volume 2 of the DVD releases, I guess it just is not one that offers all that much entertainment and charm, still, it did produce the far better and enjoyable A Goofy Movie (1995), which I prefered to the big animated Disney release that same year, in Pocahontas. Anyway, thansk for your post, and again, I might have to try and look up a few of these other animated Disney shows, which went above my head as a kid back then,.

Ducktales Goof Troop Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers Gummi Bears Winnie the Pooh
Never really got into Darkwing Duck, I think it was more a Toon Disney thing and we just had regular Disney, I sure love it now though.
