Just received this notice with my (AT&T) phone bill, but can't tell if it applies to everyone, nationwide (though I think it would):
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted 988 as a new three-digit number to be used nationwide to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline, starting July 16, 2022. Customers must continue to dial 1.800.273.TALK to reach the Lifeline until July 16, 2022.
In order for 988 to work in your area code, 10-digit local dialing must first be implemented. Get ready to change the way you dial (all) your local calls!
What Will Be The New Dialing Procedure?
To complete all local calls, you will now need to dial area code + telephone number. This applies to ALL calls within your area code that are currently dialed with seven digits.
Who Will Be Affected?
Anyone with a telephone number from your area code will need to make this change from 7-digit local dialing to 10-digit local dialing.
When Will The Change Begin?
Beginning April 24, 2021, you should begin dialing 10 digits (area code + telephone number) for all local calls. If you forget and dial just 7 digits, your call will still be completed.
Beginning October 24, 2021, you MUST dial 10 digits (area code + telephone number) for ALL local calls. On and after this date, local calls dialed with only 7 digits may not be completed, and a recording will instruct you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. You must hang up and dial again using the area code and the 7-digit number.
Beginning July 16, 2022, dialing "988" will route your call to National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline.

This has been the case here in Montreal for at least two years. Don't know if it's all over Canada, or just locally.

We've had to dial ten digits for many years, even for local numbers.
There was a time when we only had to dial 5 numbers.

Boy am I glad we don't have them anymore. They kept doubling our bill each month so we canceled.

Home area code dialing has been in place, here, as well. It started 2-3 years ago.

What's the point of it? Going from 7 to 10 numbers for a local call is somehow 'progress'?

I didnt' listen too much. what did I care if someone needed the combine because their corn was ready to harvest? but it could have been fun! Catman 猫的主人 do you remember party lines??

Agreed.......and how is it that they were able to implement the '911' three-digit emergency number nationwide, without having to make a change like this, but adding another three-digit number ('988' for the new National Suicide Prevention line) to the system NOW requires everybody to use an area code on ALL their local calls ?? Enigma, I do remember party lines. I think we had one when we lived in Alameda County for a couple of years, but I was too little to be very phone savvy. I don't think we had one after moving back to the city.
I visited my grandparents every summer, in Oregon. They had a party line for quite a while. As I recall, there was a ring "signal," for the household that was being called. One long ring, was for one home ... two short rings was for the other "party."

I remember to call another on the party line one used a code. Seems like 11212 but I'm not sure. Lol I haven't thought of this in years

If we do that here, THEN we get a message on the phone saying the call won't go through because we don't need the area code for a local number.
