So, on Friday (2/12/2021) the I.R.S. first started accepting U.S. taxpayers 2020 tax year returns, but when I e-filed mine this weekend, it stated that a refund could still take as long as three weeks to be sent (though I realize that many times, but not ALWAYS, the refund comes sooner), which is not really a surprise, having done it this way (i.e., e-filed) before.
But does anyone know how (e-filed) tax returns are actually handled by the I.R.S.? In other words, does a human being actually ever view these things, or do their computers first process them, and then "flag", and pull out, only those returns that need to be reviewed (for whatever reason), that are only then, individually processed (i.e., viewed) by an actual person?
Though I realize that they (the I.R.S.) very quickly begin receiving MILLIONS of returns in a short period of time, 3 weeks still seems like an inordinately long time for refunds to go out if they are in fact processed directly (i.e., electronically), and only handled by their computer systems, and never personally seen/handled by a human being.
OR is that NOT the case at all, and does EACH and EVERY return still get personally viewed by an I.R.S. agent at some point before a refund is ever issued ??
