I check out the trivia section of most films i watch and it's interesting to read that some actors are notoriously difficult to get on with. Gene Hackman seems to be one character that was more often than not an asshole on set but the actor that seemed to be the worst from what i've read is Gene Kelly. In pretty much every trivia section of every film he had a role in he comes across as a complete dick so i'm left wondering if he is the most difficult person to work with in film history

Katherine Heigl also seems to be a LEGENDARILY 'complicated' person (and someone who once had an even MORE difficult "stage mother" people were forced to deal with for many years) to work with that turns up on all those lists, and in all those videos detailing "problematic" performers........yet, as with some of these others, she inexplicably still seems to get PLENTY of work..... SAVE FERRIS

The difference is that Gene Kelly or whoever-the bad stuff is covered up. Heigl got in trouble for publicly speaking her opinions on Hollywood. You can't do that.
Look at Charles Bronson in this clip arguing with the director about the story. It was not uncommon in the old days.

Marlon Brando had quite the reputation for this. Klaus Kinski was fucking nuts.

Katherine Heigl is still getting in trouble , but I think her essential problem is her being a worrier , and it seems to sometimes snowball from there . A lot of directors like to work with her , but some directors don't like problemic actors , in other words , having to spend time sorting out what's wrong . And apparently she went through a bad time a decade back , when she started to drink because of her nervousness , and showed up on set like that , and word spread .

Marlon Brando was notoriously difficult to work with, even going as so far to refusing to lose weight for Apocalypse Now

Marlon Brando was notoriously difficult to work with, even going as so far to lose weight for Apocalypse Now He takes a million dollar advance, threatens to not show up. When he does, he's drunk, overweight, and didn't bother reading the script. Coppola had to think about to how shoot him to avoid showing his girth.

Marilyn Monroe, later. Just because she was becoming a train wreck. Constantly late, couldn't remember her lines, wanted rewrites. Truman Capote wanted her badly for Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's. But the studio would have none of it.

Klaus Kinski's gotta be the king in this department, right? Love Herzog calmly narrating this freak-out, calling it mild compared to previous outbursts.

Klaus Kinski's gotta be the king in this department, right? Have always enjoyed the 1980s horror film, Crawlspace, where Kinski supposedly threw in such an chaotic and aggressive behaviour during filming, that it lead to rumors about some italian producer (sounded more like a hitman/mobster) came up with the idea of killing off the film star, and then cashing in on the insurance later on. I think something, well, similar, (the killing part) happened a few times earlier, with one of the Kinski/Herzog films, and where a few of the indian chiefs, supposedly offered to have Kinski killed, because of all the problems he caused during production. Herzog joked that for a moment, he thought about letting them get a hold of his leading man. They actually did a short film, much later on, named: Please Kill Mr. KinskiFrom Wikipedia: The production of Crawlspace was troubled by the disruptive, combative and eccentric behavior of star Klaus Kinski. More than a decade later, in 1999, director David Schmoeller produced and directed a nine-minute film about his experience with Kinski entitled Please Kill Mr. Kinski. In it, the director recounts severe problems working with the notoriously difficult actor (see production section, above). When Empire Pictures declined to allow Schmoeller and his producers to fire the actor, Schmoeller alleges that the "Italian producer" (presumably Roberto Bessi) came up with a plan to have Kinski killed for the insurance money (fortunately, Schmoeller explains, "cooler heads prevailed"). After finding out that Schmoeller and the producers had attempted to have him fired, Kinski became even more difficult to work with, making bizarre requests and causing chaos on the set. By the end of the shoot, Schmoeller claims the entire crew was verbally urging him to "Please kill Mr. Kinski."

I love all these hilarious little stories from fellow actors, such as Stephen Tobolowsky in the Glimmer Man (1996), where some are even funnier than the films themselves:

I remember a story about Eddie Murphy, that he once punched a director in the face on set, because the director had given orders to one of Murphy's personal assistants. I thought it was Frank Oz couldn't find any confrimation of this though.
Mickey Rourke used to be notoriously difficult to work with.
Michael Pitt was fired from Boardwalk Empire because of his constant partying and being late on set. They also recast his character on Hannibal, seems people are not too thrilled working with him.
