This storm has been a bitch. Power has been off 60 hours with 1/2 hour on yesterday as a tease.
Lucky to have a gas stove and fireplace. Temp has gotten as low as 49 inside.
Been having to move food a lot. Outside has been the freezer and garage the refrigerator. But we had one thaw and that was getting iffy. My frozen pipe became a gusher.
I'm concerned that the real thaw will come before the power returns. Just made a burger, Tosses soup into sauteed onions, mushrooms and garlic. Had several chicken breasts that had been in the fridge. Will have to eat the costliest foods first. Shrimp, etc.

Keeping good thoughts for all of you who are menaced by this/these storm/s. I have both a high school friend, and a college sorority sister, who live in Austin. It's not a pretty picture.
It's good that you have some frozen foods on hand ... and a giant freezer at your disposal.
I hope that all of you will keep in touch, as the electricity allows.

So sorry for all of you in Texas! This weather is not something that you are used to anyway and then to be without power on top of it all. We have been having controlled rolling blackouts here, but luckily power is only off for a half hour to hour for most people. We've been getting snow on top of it all and extreme low temperatures....down to -25F one night! We've been lucky so far but many have not. Really ready for it to start warming up this weekend and definitely ready for summer!!
Take care and stay safe!!

It would seem that state officials are blaming everything on those wretched windmills, all over the state. Reagan deregulated energy, and Texas decided they wanted no part of the interconnected energy grid and regulation. Our for-profit energy industry, despite Federal urging in 2011, decided not to insulate natural gas lines, which froze (more than half of our electric power is from gas). They installed wind turbines (12-20% of power), but did not include the heaters that keep them from freezing in places like Minnesota, Norway, Denmark, Russia, and even Antarctica, and they have not done annual weatherization. They basically gambled and finally lost. Oh, well, we don't have sand and salt either for the roads or snow plows.

I was in San Antonio in January of 82. The weather was the craziest I had ever seen. In the 80s one minute and down to 18 the next. One pleasant memory, I could smell the yellow rose everywhere. The River Walk is nice too, if you ever go there. But I could Forget the Alamo!

One last freeze tonight and should be 74 by Wednesday.

I lost one of my feral cats on Feb 16th, he was about 6 years old - I've been feeding him since he was a juvenile and I named him Hamish Macbeth after a favorite character in a series. He never let me within 10 feet of him but he slept in a doggie igloo filled with straw in the backyard, he was in poor health, his paws have been swollen and red since summer. I found him in the igloo on the morning of the 16th, I think he froze to death. I'm heartbroken. We bought a huge pot to bury him (can't dig in this ground) and covered him with soil, I'll plant flowers in the pot in a few weeks. Sometimes life sucks. I feel bad for everyone suffering from the cold temperatures.

We're back to normal here, except for those without water, and the few regions that still have a boil ban - mine just ended. Though the store shelves are empty of so many things. Surreal to have 70 degree temperatures.

Surreal to have 70 degree temperatures. I'm glad you're getting back to normal, sounds like you were a little better prepared than a lot of people, you seem to be a person with a lot of common sense. Hope you don't get an outrageous power bill. We didn't lose power here in this part of Alabama but it did get down to 19 degrees and I think the heat pump struggled. When we lived in the Chicago area, we had gas heat but when the power was out, the furnace was also out because the switch was electric. I did have an old oven with a pilot light so when the power was out, I would turn on the oven and boil water on the stove for hot water bottles and move the reptiles into the kitchen. If Hamish would have allowed me to capture him, he would still be alive, he was just too frail to survive the cold and I suspect he had a respiratory ailment as well as the swollen paws. When he didn't come to eat I looked into the igloo and he was stretched out and looked peaceful, he probably just went to sleep forever - I always take the deaths of kitties very hard.

You're a good kitties mom. Modern gas furnaces and ovens have electric ignitions for safety. I hope you have a carbon monoxide detector. We got to 6 degrees, and I was able to use the stove.

I feel bad for everyone suffering from the cold temperatures. So sorry to hear this news, WKM. I worried about our outside cats. I have good spots made for them to sleep. Sometimes they use them, sometimes not. I was really afraid of them freezing to death, but they all survived over a week of extreme temperatures. I made sure to feed them extra to keep up their strength and that may have helped. The chickens stayed the entire time inside their coop and although I lost one, all of the others survived. I don't know if she froze or if something else was wrong with her. She was one of my younger hens.
We're supposed to hit almost 70F this afternoon, after a -35 wind chill last week. Crazy!! The snow all melted off yesterday, with a few icy spots left on the drive on the north side of the house. They should melt this afternoon. It's a real muddy mess out there now, but the wind is supposed to blow today too and that should help to dry things up.
Hope Texas is back to 'normal' soon. What a terrible experience for everyone there. We lost water pressure this week and had a plumber out. We had no leaks and didn't think Mom did either. He came back again yesterday to do some more checking and found a broken pipe in her crawlspace under the house. He's coming back this afternoon to fix it. I feel sorry for him having to be working in that cramped space. I makes me claustrophobic just thinking about it!!
