From those directors, Carpenter is my favorite. Just this past week I watched The Thing & Big Trouble in Little China.
If I were to compare, I think a key difference in John Carpenter's filmmaking style is he went to film school. The other three directors' training was unorthodox, to say the least, and I feel they were drive-in filmmakers in the truest sense. They became more polished as they gained experience (and their projects grew in budget), but to appreciate their work you have to be able to accept rough edges. It comes with the territory.
There are commonalities between all four directors too. They worked together in various capacities over the years, while maintaining friendly, professional rivalries.
Having been a fan for many years of these four filmmakers, I think more now about Carpenter's tributes to the others when they departed between 2015 and 2017 - that he lost three friends. For many of us who love American horror cinema, it felt that way too.
John Carpenter remembering ...
“He was sort of a guy out of time, kind of a bebop guy from the ’60s. He was so much fun; he loved movies. We hit it off together.” {on George Romero}
"My friend Wes has left us too soon. He was truly an Old School director. I had a great time directing him. I’m REALLY gonna miss him." {on Wes Craven}
"He was a kind, decent man and my friend." {on Tobe Hooper)
