Known as Hitler's architect and the author of an amazing book, Inside the Third Reich. And a person who history has treated very very kindly. There's a documentary, The Nazi Who aid "I'm Sorry". Title came from the perception that he was contrite at the Nuremberg Trials. But is this deserved. He was Hitler's architect, but also Reich Minister of Armaments and War Production. And he did very well. Despite Germany being bombed back to the Cambrian Era and cut off from many essential natural resources, he kept guns and bullets flowing right up to the very end. And, towards the end, he was the 4th most powerful man in Nazi Germany, behind Hitler, Himmler and Bormann. But the real interest came during the War Crimes Trials. Speer said that he didn't know of the Final Solution until October, 1944. A lie. There's photos of him at Mauthausen earlier. He was also present at a speech given by Himmler early in 1943 where Himmler flat out said the Jews were being exterminated. And no one could be that far into Hitler's inner circle without knowing. Speer also said that he was active in the anti-Hitler movement. Another lie. The July 20th plotters approached Speer and he turned them in. He also claimed that he was going to pump poison gas into the Bunker but someone extended the vents to a height on 9 or ten feet. The 4th most powerful man in Germany couldn't find a ladder. Also, the armament factories were the greatest slave labor project since the Pyramids. Which makes Speer the greatest slave master since Pharaoh. Fritz Saukel, Minister of Labor, was hung for war crimes while Speer got 20. They hung the slave catcher and let the slave master live. Speer came off at Nuremberg like a rock star. He was apologetic. So was Arthur Seyss-Inquart and Ernst Kaltenbrunner (both deservedly hung). He was educated, so was Hans Frank (deservedly hung). It wasn't hard to look better when you're on trial with fat Goring, loony Rudy Hess, true monsters like Kaltenbrunner, Seyss-Inquart, Frank, pure scum like Julius Streicher.

Sounds like a proverbial wolf in sheep’s clothing. Speer has the perception of the anti-Nazi. Many said he shouldn't have got 20 years. He was one of three Nuremberg defendants, with Hess and Donitz, who served the whole sentence. Some say he should have been hung. He was good for history. Speer was on The World at War and other documentaries. And certainly Inside the Third Reich is an important work. Speer is the highest Nazi to leave a memoir. Should Goring been allowed to live in order to write a memoir?

Him and Manstein were really able to shift the blame for their own actions.
