I should read more of his books. I’ve only read ‘The Remains of the Day’, which I thought was brilliant.

I should read more of his books. I’ve only read ‘The Remains of the Day’, which I thought was brilliant. The first 185 pages is a very high level overview of Irish revolutionary history from the 1916 uprising through the troubles. It is told through the first person lens of the author and is anything but an objective history. Coogan's clear pro-socialist and anti-catholic viewpoints are scattered throughout this half of the narrative. AND THEN in the last 120 pages, is a series of tacked on vignettes (that are likely recycled editorials) that amount to nothing more than an all out assault on the Catholic Church and Capitalism. If you enjoy reading about the abuses of some priest within the Catholic Church; and the Church's audacity to provide schools; and the evil of seeking to protect the unborn; and wicked capitalism; this book is all for you, but it is not balanced history.

I listened to an abridged audiobook of KatS that was serialised on BBC radio.
Not really much to the story at all. I liked the narrator though.
