... was totally over?
That there wasn’t even a glimmer of hope remaining for DC fans?
For me it was Justice League. After that, there was no hope of recovery. Even the tiny positive blip that was WW was squandered with the abysmal WW 1984. How did it go so wrong?

I knew it was over when Thor: Ragnarok trounced Justice League at the box office and then nearly two weeks later, the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War was released.

It was over when DC realized that holy crap, this shared universe thing actually works and instead of taking their time and doing things right, hired a man who jerks off to Frank Miller comics to make a dark broody Superman and a serial killer Batman.

DC and Marvel are bigger than the films. They are many mediums, and each has a competitive edge over the other in various domains. No one dominates the other across all of these mediums.
Regarding the films, yes, the MCU dominates the box office. But that’s about all. Both companies have made films which are loathed. And both have films which are critically loved. As far as the academy awards are concerned, DC has the edge.
Batman will always be DC and will always have the potential for superlative cinema. Marvel can NOT diminish Batman. Then there is Superman and Wonder Woman. They are much loved by hundreds of millions of people.
DC is only ever a few years away from dominating the cinema as well. The MCU will have to continue making a popular product or they’ll fall behind.
And as far as an endearing legacy is concerned, future generations are not going to be turning on Avengers: Endgame. They’ll be watching The Dark Knight. The cream always rises to the top.

The moment Zack Snyder was hired.

The moment Batman was shoehorned into the sequel for Man of Steel. That seemed to be quickly buffered with news of the Justice League movie to come. Ensemble mega movie with characters we barely spent time with.
CA Civil War released within weeks was the nail in that coffin.
Even now, all their properties seem aimless within a so-called shared universe. I'm buying JL Snyder Cut on blu-ray when I can, because at least that's a nice sizeable standalone 4 hour excursion.
DCU will not be viable again until Superman isn't an afterthought or offered up as some conceptualized freakshow. No matter how many Batmans & Wonder Womans they churn out.

As soon as JOKER dominated at the box office and the Oscars, WB was able to declare victory, invoking the "quality over quantity" rule.

Honestly, Man of Steel gave me deep reservations. The reaction to Batman Vs Superman finished off any doubt I had that Marvel were well ahead of the game when it came to mastering combined universe stories capable of pleasing critics and audiences alike.

Further testimony that it’s over for DC fans. The last, and possibly only, really good DC movie was over a decade ago. It must be tough to admit that.

WW didn’t actually break a billion, but it was an unquestionable success. Joker broke a billion, though.

Using terms like "The last, and possibly only, really good DC movie" doesn't make you seem biased at all. It also makes him seem "wrong" especially when JOKER just won two Oscars on eleven nominations. It’s also a testimony to the lack of exceptional DC superhero movies when DC fans have to glom on to Joker to pad their portfolio. A decidedly un-superhero movie in every way. ... and I see that lenlen wants to add Aquaman in the list of really good DC movies, I guess because it made Transformer money ... and Transformer money = quality. Uh, no.
