Overall, not for a particular genre.
Has to be the 60s and 70s. Nothing else really comes close.

It's a tough question. It depends on what you like. I'm going to say the 80's and 90's. My regard for Susumu Hirasawa's music and New Age music from the Narada label really tips the scales for me. That and all the good electronic music like Autechre and Boards of Canada. I like synthpop, Enya, and The Cranberries too. It's a tough decision because I'd be missing the best Beach Boys music and Black Sabbath music. Still, I think I made the right choice.

I'd pick a fifteen year period from the mid 50s to the early 70s. You have rockabilly, Chess, young Elvis, Chuck Berry, JL Lewis, Little Richard, Brook Benton, Beatles, early Rolling Stones, other British Invasion groups, Motown, Memphis, early psychedelia, and the Allman Brothers. And some country greats too: Patsy Cline, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, and country-rock with the Byrds and Gram Parsons.

It's a bit of a silly question. It will invariably be when people were of a certain age and place and music was very focal to them. Modern music was created through the 50's so you could say then, it came of age in the 60's and diversified the most so there is a good case. The 70's was when it truly exploded and Punk came to the fore so you could say then. If you like metal you may well say the 80's, etc etc etc. My heart will say the 70's, my head the 60's although it's often argued the perfect album year was 1971. Maybe 67-77 for me.

If you like metal you may well say the 80's I am a fan of metal, traditional heavy metal in particular. So yes, I would tend to say the '80s - as that was when the template for the genre was set, and the genre hit its commercial peak. However, I think of the twenty-first century as one long decade, and a case could be made for that period as well. If you look at the table below, my album count for this century exceeds that for the '80s by a two to one margin. DECADE | Album Count | 1970s | 2 | 1980s | 90 | 1990s | 11 | 2000s | 81 | 2010s | 120 | 2020s | 3 |

I don't think a truly correct answer is possible despite so many seeming to think there is. There's great music every decade and any measurable differences, especially any decade from the 50s to the current one, are negligible. One's personal preferences or the old belief "of course it's the 60s or 70s" are simply not true. Each decade has so many goodies I would never shame any by picking a "best".

My top 3 would be 1970s 1960s 1980s I think I’d use the same ranking. Conversely, what’s the worst? Gotta be either 2010s or 2000s.

Interesting answer. If we’re going by any 10 year period, than I’ll say 1986-1995.

The 60's I'd say, c'mon . Is there a decade better? Released better music in another decade, I'd say not. It's definately music from a time, when music didn't suck yet.
Are we in a time when music does suck, eh, yeah?
