While going to a store nearby to buy a hair clip, 8-year-old Nurin Jazlin Binti Jazimin mysteriously disappeared on August 20, 2007. She was last seen by her parents before she went to a nearby marketplace by herself to purchase a hair clip. The store was close to their residence in Section 1, Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, so it wasn't uncommon for her parents to let their daughter be unattended when traveling to the market.
The trip should have been relatively short between going to and back from the store. When Nurin wasn’t back from the store, her parents began feeling sheer panic. They filed a missing person report which led to authorities subsequently activating a search for her. The search was extensive that involved multiple organizations. Despite that, the search for her ended up being fruitless.
The police had a bit of hope when they discovered surveillance footage of Nurin being forcefully dragged into a white van by an unidentified person near the area. Despite knowing what happened that evening, the authorities were not able to gather any substantial evidence.
On September 17, 2007, close to a month later, a store owner in Petaling, Jaya, came upon a mysterious gym bag nearby his store. While being curious, the store owner decided to look inside. That’s when he found the nude and deceased body of Nurin Jazlin. Due to the dramatic change in physical appearance, authorities were not able to identify her. Her parents were brought in to identify the body but they weren’t able to do it. It was even suggested that the child was from a foreign Country and parents still kept their hope of finding their daughter. Unfortunately for them, the later DNA testing proved that the body belonged to Nurin Jazlin. During this unfortunate time, Nurin Jazlin’s parents were also subjected to multiple prank calls with the speaker making false claims regarding the whereabouts of their daughter.
WARNING: GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION AND RESULT OF AUTOPSY
During the autopsy, medical examiners concluded that the death of Nurin occurred only recently. According to the analysis, She had been dead only for a few hours before the discovery which suggested that Nurin suffered unimaginable torture and abuse for weeks on end.
Medical examiners also found cucumber and eggplant inside of her genitals. It was suggested that her rectum had ruptured due to the nature of this act. Her body also had severe bruising throughout the entire body, especially around her neck, which indicated strangulation was the final method that caused her tragic death. Though an untreated bacterial infection could have played a role in her unfortunate demise.
The authorities proceeded to check the CCTV footage of the place where the gym bag was originally found. They started getting some clues as before the store was opened for business, an unidentified male driving a motorcycle was captured dropping off the bad. The suspect also seemed to be speaking with someone on his cell phone right when he dropped off the bad.
Though the authorities were able to get a visual of the suspect, the images taken from the CCTV were not able to provide accurate identification. The footage was also too blurry in order for the authorities to make out a valid license plate number of the motorcycle.
The same camera also picked up a woman, after an hour, who was loitering in the same area where the unidentified suspect was previously seen. The woman never acknowledged the existence of the gym bag despite it being still present in the area. Just moments later, a van with multiple people inside, pulled up to converse with the woman. After some time, she willingly got inside and the vehicle drove off.
Even though this was considered a solid break in the unsolved case, the authorities weren’t able to retrieve information that could move the case forward due to the low quality of the CCTV. Nonetheless, the authorities were under the impression that all of those people captured on the footage were involved in the case of Nurin Jazlin one way or another.
On September 28, 2007, the authorities had gathered enough information that prompted them to raid upon a store in Section 7, Shah Alam. They were able to arrest four males and one woman during this raid. All five individuals were thoroughly questioned. Though the woman was released, the males were apprehended for several days.
However, those four suspects were also released soon due to a lack of evidence tying them to the abduction and the case. At this point, the authorities didn’t have many leads so they, along with a known businessman, decided to put up a hefty amount of money as a reward for providing information and lead to the arrest of those involved in Nurin’s death.
With a considerable amount of money on the table, lots of tips started to come to the authorities. On October 2, 2017, one specific tip leads to an arrest of a 23-year-old Indonesian woman. Just as she was about to be arrested, she swallowed a SIM card that was believed to have stored evidence linking her to the involvement of Nurin Jazlin’s murder.
The suspected woman was also in possession of two other cell phones along with four SIM cards. The authorities were able to trace one particular prepaid phone which had the same number as one of the numbers from the prank calls that Nurin parents received. It was theorized that the suspected woman was the caregiver during the weeks of Nurin’s abduction. It was also believed that the woman arrested was the same woman that was believed to have been captured in the CCTV footage near the gym bad.
However since the SIM card was theorized to be the definitive proof, it being swallowed ultimately left the authorities unable to charge her and she was released soon after. The lack of evidence is believed to the reason why this case is still unsolved, even though the general consensus among the authorities was that they knew who was involved.
However, because of her swallowing the SIM card that more than likely contained the definitive proof the authorities were searching for, she ultimately was released. Even though the general consensus from the authority's perspective is that they know who was involved in the entire event, the lack of evidence is the reason for this case still being unsolved.
In 2018, after almost 11 years, the father of Nurin had pleaded with the authorities to reopen the case of his daughter and use modern equipment/technology to try and solve it. It’s been almost 3 years since then and there has been no news as of yet (someone from Malaysia could correct me on that).
Thanks to u/blue_prin for providing the link to an article published in March or May of 2020. It seems like the case is still open and the police is still investigating however nothing else was given. It's also interesting that Musa Hassan, Former Inspector-General of Police, said that back in 2007, they send the video samples of CCTV to the United States for analysis. Don't know what became of it but it's good to know that they did it. Maybe some AI or some tech can help with clearing the video quality.
u/blue_prin found another article from 2007(link below) where it's stated that the police did try to retrieve the SIM card from the woman. It didn't mention anything after that so I assume that they did manage to get the SIM card but it could've been really messed up/damaged beyond repair hence they wouldn't have been able to use it. It's just an assumption of mine.
Another good thing (in this otherwise very very f***** up case) is that Malaysia started an amber-alert type system called Nurin Alert. At least Nurin and her case isn't forgotten. Not by her father. Not by her mother. Not by the police that originally worked on her case. Not by her relatives. Maybe someday, Nurin will be finally remembered for who she was and not what happened to her once the case is solved.
I only heard about this case when I was watching a cold-case Youtube video and was surprised by how little attention this case has gotten in that platform. From what I hear, this case was really big in Malaysia but not so much outside of it. I hope to spread this case and bring awareness of this messed-up case.
I hope with the all-new advancement in technology, genealogy, and how lots of decades-old cold cases have been solved, someone tries to do the same for Nurin’s case and bring justice and closure for her family.
I hope this angel is in a better place after going through hell on earth for no reason. I hope Nurin Jazlin will be remembered.
