I am making my grocery list and need to pick up mayonnaise. I have been buying Hellman's since forever. My parents used it. My grandparents used it. Even the aunts and uncles and cousins always used Hellman's.
I've also avoided "store brands" of pretty much anything.
Then as I'm perusing the menu I do see a different brand that specifically mentions that it's made with organic free range eggs and I thought, given the choice, I'd really rather support that type of business.
I'm just wondering after so many years of being used to a specific taste, will I notice that much of a difference?

Some things, yes. Morton's salt (both regular and Kosher). Hellman's mayo. Heinz ketchup. For regular mustard, Goulden's Spicy Brown. Grey Poupon dijon mustard. Lee and Perrins worchestershire sauce. My daughter doesn't like the cranberry mold I make, so she MUST have Ocean Spray jellied cranberry sauce.

For most items, no. Store brand does fine except for sodas and mustard. In fact, the store brand crackers are actually better than Triscuits and Wheat Thins.

No. Brand loyalty for its own sake is ludicrous.

Let me put it this way, I'm loyal to quality, not a brand name. Even if it's a brand I've loved my whole life, if they change their product for the worst, I'm done with them period.

I live on the west coast, where Hellman's is Best Foods. I know from visiting friends who use other brands ... Miracle Whip/others ... that I will never stray from Best Foods. A few years ago I was in Costco, and saw Hellman's mayo, on a special display for a very low price. It was, pretty obviously, a shipping error. But, I bought a jar, and it was identical to Best Foods.
I'm pretty much with Pinky on her examples, except that I'm fickle, when it comes to ketchup. I'll buy at the best price. I agree with Pinky's daughter on the quality of Ocean Spray, but I don't think I've seen any alternative on the shelves, here.
The "store" brands that I've tried, from several chains, haven't been satisfying. I love Triscuit's "original" crackers. I tried Safeway's, at a better price, but they had a sweetness, that I didn't like. Trader Joe's corn flakes are completely without flavor. I didn't try eating the box, but I'm guessing there would have been no difference.
I've heard that some "store brands," are contracted to be made by major-brand companies. But, I don't know which ones are included on that list, or if the formulas are altered in any way.
All of that said, I'm from the "Baby Boom" era (old), and I made my career in commercial broadcasting. In commercial broadcasting, there is tremendous pressure to program to attract a younger demographic ... 18-42 was, somehow, sacred to advertisers. That seemed confusing to me, as older folks, who are more established, have more money to spend, on the whole.
The reason for the targeting to younger people is that older people tend to BE "brand loyal," because of established practices. Advertisers want to get to the younger demographic, to establish that "brand loyalty," in THEIR products.
I buy what I'm happy with.

We drank Boost for years until they put Stevia in it to make you lose weight, which made it taste medicinal. The point of Boost is a nutritional supplement so you DON'T lose weight. We switched to Ensure at the drop of a hat.

Never had Hellman's, my mom has always only eaten the Always Save brand of mayonnaise, I only use it on sandwiches and in tuna salad...for no more than I use it, it's good, she LOVES it, she puts it on just about everything.

With respect to clothing, yes, especially when I can count on a brand for quality and consistent sizing.

Not really. I buy brand names if I like the product better and vice versa.
A lot of store brands are the exact same thing as name brands and the only difference is the name on the label.

I have 5 brands I have been insanely loyal to throughout my life. For some reason.
1. Panasonic for cell phones - yeah that was a great decade 2. Dr Martens for boots (still wear those) 3. Clinique for non decorative cosmetic 4. Dior for decorative cosmetic 5. Victoria Secret for underwear. I have not bought any other label in more than 15 years I think but I am about to. I cant take ther bras anymore. While they look lovely, their straps are famously thin and thus not very comfy for DDD cups. I kept ignoring this for a long time, because they have so many other things I like about them but I think now as I age I cant lie to myself anymore. Yeah, I DO prefer boob comfort over boob looks. There. I said it. Good bye VS, its been a good run but I need to move on.That or start making wider straps for bigger sizes god damn it!

When younger, in my late 30's and 40's, I worse exclusively VC. Something in they way they change making their product was not good. I wore some of their stuff in my 50's. I quit in my late 50's. The stuff is crap, and there are better garments that look better out there that don't cost an arm and a leg. Plus, their bras aren't designed well.

I used to wear VS undergarments when I was younger as well. Remember when they also carried clothing? I wore a lot of their clothing when I wanted something with a bit of flash. Otherwise I'm pretty faithful to Ralph Lauren, and have been for decades. I'm still convinced VS changed, and went from making quality undergarments to cheap stuff our of cheap material put together cheaply. Combine that with the fact that I also changed and it was more important for me to be comfortable, than it was for me to have cleavage. Hey, remember those old commercials with measuring tape criss-crossing over a mannequin wearing a turtleneck that were done by Jane Russell, where she talked about how Playtex bras would "lift and separate"? Seems to me the trend has gone in a different direction now.

I was a total Abercrombie and Fitch brand snob for years in the mid 90s to the turn of the century back when they were more geared to a college age audience (perfect time since I was in college). Then they started gearing their clothes to high school kids and "muscle cut" which meant that even if you were buff, your arms wouldn't fit in the sleeves and shoulders were cut too short. Plus, they started prematurely aging their clothes which was a bad idea. Nowadays I just wear whatever I find on Dillards (department store) for sale. Usually the store brand (Roundtree and York).
For food, I really bought a lot of Allen's canned goods for years, but then I believe the family that owned the company sold off and now they are owned by someone else. I also try to support Texas brands as much as possible.
For cars, I try to stick to GM but they make it pretty hard lately (my Dad's side of the family had nothing but GM's, usually Chevrolet or Pontiac for decades going back to before WW2). My latest car purchase was a Dodge Challenger. I would have bought a Camaro and kept supporting GM but the interior was way too tight compared to the Challenger.
