I know this has a serious cult following. This is about the fourth time I've tried watching it. I'm on episode 3 and still can't follow what the heck is going on. Is it supposed to be that way? From what people have said, this also has aliens in it?
There's also a revamped Twin Peaks, right, where it was renewed a couple of years ago?

There's also a revamped Twin Peaks, right, where it was renewed a couple of years ago? It was the 3rd season (the show was cancelled after the 2nd season in the 90s and it was followed by a prequel film).

My all time favorite TV series. Nothing else comes close.
The original series ran for 2 seasons in 1990-1991.
If you’re lost on episode 3 after 4 attempts, it’s probably not for you.
It’s David Lynch and like a lot of his work it’s quite dark and surreal and sometimes appears, “weird, for the sake of being weird”. The original two seasons also feature a very 90s type of quirky humor and knowingly pastiche/homage the soap opera format.
There are mild allusions to aliens/the supernatural, but it's not presented very overtly. The whole series to a degree is about mystery and withholding information. Just when you think you have the answers, it throws another curve ball. Not something to watch if you want everything tied up neatly.
This was followed in 1992 by the prequel film Fire Walk With Me. This is much darker and heavier and almost devoid of the humor of the series, which upset a lot of fans. It was more like a stand alone David Lynch film, comparable to Blue Velvet or Wild at Heart.
In 2017 a third season was produced taking place 25 years after the events of the original series. This whole season was written and directed by Lynch and almost plays like a 14 hour Lynch film. Again, it’s a lot darker and stranger, and takes a lot from all his previous work, particularly his final feature film INLAND EMPIRE. It’s audacious and amazing and like nothing else on television, but obviously not for everyone.

It's not about the destination, but the journey.

If you’re lost on episode 3 after 4 attempts, it’s probably not for you. I'd have to agree. I have a friend who's been trying to get into it for like 10 years, and he appears confident he'll make it this time, but I don't know. The show is simply not for everyone and it's kinda strange watching people seemingly force it on themselves when I easily binged it in like a week or two... twice. In the case of the OP, are you lost by the storyline or the tone? If you can't follow the plot in the first three episodes, it's only gonna get worse - the show goes completely apeshit toward the middle of season 2. The tone as stated is like a cross between soap opera parody and surreal dream. If you're not into the characters or their quirks, I don't think it's gonna get any better for you in that regard either.

I like David Lynch and I like weird and surreal and quirky and don't need things tied up nicely in a bow. I was determined to give this a go because of the cult following and given that there are movies that I like that many others do not that are also so quirky or peculiar. I figured that would give me an edge. I have heard such rave reviews of Twin Peaks, I simply had to give it a go. Kept feeling like I was missing something.

TP is a lot more comedic than Lynch's other work, at least until you get to the prequel movie. My first question if someone doesn't like it is whether they get or enjoy the humor. Otherwise I'd figure a Lynch fan wouldn't have trouble getting into it, especially if they liked Blue Velvet.

Thematically it's pretty similar to Lynch's other work, in particular Blue Velvet. The main difference would be the humor and all the lighter side plots involving the other townspeople, distracting from driving the "plot" forward.
It's the last thing I'd normally recommend, but if you're not getting in to the series, but love Blue Velvet, Lost Highway or Mulholland Dr., maybe try the prequel film Fire Walk With Me. But it will spoil a lot of the series if you're not already familiar with the major mysteries and their outcomes.

As I said, I've really enjoyed Lynch's other work and perhaps one mistake I've made is not separating this from those? I'm not sure why I feel this bizarre, almost twisted urge to be determined to keep giving Twin Peaks a try, over and over. So many people love it and speak so highly, I keep feeling like I'm missing out on something fantastic by not "getting it."

I've never thought of Twin Peaks as an outright comedy, but there's definitely comic elements. Might be worth a try if you're determined to "get it". It does get very dark at times too, so you'll be switching back and forth a bit. It probably is worth separating it a little from Lynch's other work as it is the one he had the least personal control over (except maybe Dune), especially parts of the second season which he had almost no involvement in.

Also...if you do get through the original series, as a fan of Lynch's other work, you'll probably really appreciate Fire Walk With Me and the 2017 Return series.
