Very interesting stuff if you haven't heard about it, turns out people will often do horrific things simply through the power of suggestion. It's why when war criminals are put on trial, their excuse is "I was simply following orders": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment

It's why when war criminals are put on trial, their excuse is "I was simply following orders":
I think the experiment was about more than people just being persuaded to follow orders (the Stanford Prison Experiment was a better example of that particular phenomenon). It was more to show that people are willing to do the most dreadful things - inflict torture and pain to a life-threatening extent - for a cause they believe in. The volunteers did what they did because they believed they were doing the right thing, not simply because somebody was ordering them to do it. They were bombarded with the underlying message: " This is important scientific research" which made them hopeless devotees: devout followers of the process they thought they were taking part in.
Perhaps this is just an 'angels on the head of a pin' distinction, but it does shine a spotlight on 'belief', religious or otherwise (and this is a religious board after all!). People sometimes come up with that well-worn saying "It takes religion to persuade good people to do bad things" but the Milgram Experiment is a clear disproof of that.
