This week I watched the horror movie 'You Should Have Left' (2020). It's a slowburn drama but I enjoyed it, particularly as it reunites filmmaker and screenwriter extraordinnaire David Koepp with leading man Kevin Bacon, 21 years on from their collaboration on the wonderful psychological horror, 'Stir Of Echoes' (1999).
I know Bacon's not the name most people think of when it comes to horror, outside of the classic genre bookends 'Friday The 13th' (1980) and 'Tremors' (1990), but he's certainly no stranger to dark material. 'Stir Of Echoes' came at a time when Bacon was appearing in films like 'Sleepers' (1996), 'Mystic River' (2003), 'The Woodsman' (2004) and others, demonstrating the work of a brilliant and fearless character actor who's said to have long terrified members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), hence his lack of an Oscar nomination; smiliar to unrepentant actors like Steve Buscemi, Ving Rhames and John Turturro, I feel he may never receive any kind of Oscar recognition (a nomination) for his sterling work in features.
Amanda Seyfried (see 'Vanity Fair' and a host of others) and Julia Garner (new article in 'Rolling Stone') have been trending lately, which many of us here called. Seyfried plays Kevin Bacon like a fiddle in 'You Should Have Left' and he has that usual carniverous look on his face when he meets a match for his wits. They keep you on edge in the first part of the movie, before Bacon takes over.
