The Exorcist is the scariest movie ever made That Black Panther is one of the best movies ever made That trope continues to slay me. Having come late to the film, and missing the initial hype (I only watched it about six months ago), I remain somewhat dumbfounded at how not particularly good a film it actually is. Apparently its main cachet lies in its usefulness as a way of demonstrating how 'woke' one is to racial justice issues by one's having watched it.

This doesn’t fit the subject of the thread exactly but I think it’s close enough. I was doing a job at this company once and during a break a group of guys started talking about their favourite comedies. They all brought up these silly comedies with Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey, that kind of thing – movies that you’d have to PAY ME to watch. So I kept my mouth shut. Then one of the guys noticed that I hadn’t said anything and asked me “you don’t like movies?”. I felt like saying “I love movies, I probably go to the movies more often than all of you combined, I just don’t like stupid comedies” – but of course I didn’t. I don’t remember how I actually replied. I have no issue with silly comedies, so long as they're actually funny, like Airplane! (1980). Surely, you're not saying AIRPLANE! is silly?

Not me personally, but I once overheard a clerk at Best Buy telling an elderly couple that movies on Fullscreen were better than Widescreen because you get the entire picture. Er...Im pretty sure I said that when DVDs where pretty new.

Animation is for kids only. This one confounds me. Disney and Pixar have produced so much memorable content over the years. Many of these films only came along when I was already an adult. I mean, I was 26 when Toy Story 3 was released. Do these people seriously contend that people like me should have missed out on that masterpiece just because of the number of candles on our birthday cakes? And have they never heard of adult animation? South Park? American Dad?

To which one's response should be: "Don't worry. The movie will do them for you." Seriously though, I can understand why if people are tired and just want something light to chill to then they may not be in the right mood for reading off a screen for long periods, but they're missing out if they eschew subtitled films altogether.

And quite frankly, in many movies, the subtitles are not necessary for all of the movie.

The Toy Story movies are for children that like talking toys while adult animation is completely different.

To be honest, in the days of yore, most TVs were fuzz, and one couldn't read the subtitles. And some people like to watch TV without their contacts or glasses, and be relaxed.. I think that's the underlying reason they don't do subtitles. I used to hate subtitles for such reasons, before TVs got better and before I got laser eye surgery in 1999 to see perfect. I still preferred the dubbed in noise, especially for kung fu movies. That was the appeal of Oriental movies. It wasn't until about 2000 when I actually got a VHS of SEVEN SAMURAI that I realized how awesome it was, even with subtitles. Knowing that some things are lost in translation, I marveled at how much wasn't lost in translation. This may be the best film ever made. I think it is better with subtitles than if it was dubbed. If it was dubbed, I would imagine there would be the comical sounding guy doing the role of Manzo or Yohei, some deep bass guy doing the voice of Gorobi or Mosuke. It wouldn't be as good. However, I could understand the nearsighted viewer next to me, if that viewer would prefer it to be dubbed. Still, it's such an incredible journey that I would think anyone would love it. One doesn't even realize how long it is, and it's non stop theatrics that make it seem like it's action packed without a single lull in the film, and I have attention deficit, so if it's non stop to me, it is truly non stop.

"I don't watch remakes." Told to me by one idiot when I told her Titanic from 1997 is good.
When discussing The Crying Game another idiot says "I think it was poorly written."

For me, there's a few key genres- any kung fu flick, any Spaghetti Western, any 70's or 80's Italian horror movie, any Japanese giant monster movie- where dubbing, especially bad dubbing, is part of the experience.

Star lord messed up the plan to defeating Thanos in Infinity War.
Books shouldn’t be made into movies. Umm what? Some of the greatest movies are based on books.

And yet...this seems to be true in the case of Jaws. From the versions I've seen, full screen, Brody's wife and kid playing on the swingset in full view when he leaves, widescreen, you barely even see the mom on the glider swing. It was weird.

That movies today are SMARTER than old ones. Okay, point to any movie made in the black and white era and show us two morons, one of them fat and pathetic, going 'uh', 'uh', 'uh', 'uh', 'yeah', 'right' for five minutes. Ain't gonna find it. That's smarter? Do tell, how so?
