I thought "Hocus Pocus" was fairly forgetable Halloween film, apparently quite a few people like this one though (constant TV showings, talks of a remake)

WTF? Thing flopped when it came out. Also, and I know I'm in the minority, but Donnie Darko. What's the big deal? Way better movies with similar themes than that. Jacobs Ladder anyone?

Space Jam. How and WHY does this have the fans it does? I don’t feel it respects the characters very much and to do a sports movie with these characters was just odd. People give me shit for liking Back In Action cause I feel in a SENSE it respects the characters more and actually kind of feels like a Looney Tunes movie.
And before anyone says well you have had to live in the 90’s. I was born in 93, so I understand the impact this movie had on some people, but for me it’s just a movie that can’t decide what it wants to be or even bothers respecting the characters. I feel like the new one will be more of the same and Lebron was such a HORRIBLE choice. I had heard they asked Kobe, but he said no. At least he was a good guy.

I didn’t get the love for Hocus Pocus either originally. It took me years to understand why people liked it. It has that feel where Disney wanted to go dark, but not TOO dark to the point it scared kids and I think everyone gives a decent performance and Bette Midler’s song is catchy. Donnie Darko is a movie I don’t get the love for either.

The Sandlot. It's fine, but I don't see why people think it's so special.

Michael Jordon teaming up with some of the most famous and loved cartoon characters of all time to play basketball against monsters, and you are confused of why it has a fanbase?

These are the very definition of nostalgia movies, hence why they are kids movies.
I am willing to bet most of these movies' fanbase saw them when they were kids and the memory of childhood is why they have lasted.
I am a someone who saw these movies as a kid and I liked each of them when I was a kid very much, but the only one that fully holds up is The Sandlot. It captures the feeling of childhood very well.
I disagree that Hocus Pocus is forgettable. The 3 stooges witches are what makes the movie memorable and it is one of the few Halloween family films that went darker than most.

Let me get this out of the way: I’m not a huge sports guy. Wasn’t then and still not one now. Now if you had given me a movie with Stallone or Arnold and made it into an action movie then we can talk. Also I said I didn’t feel it respected the characters. Another thing that irked me was the kids in this. Bugs bunny and daffy are in their house and they don’t freak out? They acted like it’s just an everyday thing.

It's not like there was a fan letter drive for these things. What is going on is the studio/corporation has some assistants go through the archives and make a report on product brands that are underused or may be revived for corporate use. That's the motivation here. I do not think anyone was eagerly awaiting Hocus Pocus 2 or Space Jam 2. In the latter case it is the cartoon characters that are the draw (sorry the pun) not Jordan. How many movies has he made on his own?
Corporate nonsense we have to deal with.

I understand that, but Michael Jordan playing Basketball with the toons didn’t mean much to me. I’ll tell you what blew me away Disney characters interacting with Final Fantasy characters in Kingdom Hearts and The Jimmy/Timmy power hour crossover on Nickelodeon.

So you are not able to understand why something is popular even if it does nothing for you? You seem to have already conceded that you understand why it has a fanbase, you just aren't part of the fanbase. You may not like sports, but you at least understand what the appeal of sports is for other people I assume.

Space Jam also had a highly successful soundtrack to add to its success.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It's a good musical, and I can see how it appeals to the LGBT community, but the movie is not my kind of thing.
Cats (2019) is going to be a cult classic, if it hasn't become one already, in a few years.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000). Honestly I don't think it's much better than the Mike Myers Cat in the Hat and the fact that it's become something of a beloved holiday classic is baffling to me.

You may not like sports, but you at least understand what the appeal of sports is for other people I assume. Yes of course I understand the appeal of sports for some people. Then you should be able to understand the reason Space Jam has a large fanbase. It is talking 2 extremely popular things and making a movie with them together andn aiming it at children. Now I definitely don't want to dismiss anyone who first saw the movie as an adult and loves it, but I am willing to bet the majority of the fanbase are huge fans for nostalgia reasons and nostalgia is an entirely emotional response. I am able to separate the two in most cases though, which is why I still think The Sandlot is a good movie. The nostalgia just adds an extra something to it. Space Jam is a decent kids movie when I watch it as an adult, but the only reason I re-watch it is for nostalgia. Something like TMNT 2 I loved as a kid. As an adult it is below average and no amount of nostalgia can make me think it is a good movie. I can watch it, but it is entirely for the memories of childhood it brings back.

I am part of that fanbase, but I don't think the fanbase is very big. I think the movie reeks of Christmas and I find it to be a genuinely hilarious parody with a perfectly cast Jim Carrey. I also admire it for the art direction and make-up. The live-action recreation of Whoville is a wonder to behold imo.
