Good list. I wouldn't go so high on Kubrick and higher on Leone myself.

Good list. I wouldn't go so high on Kubrick and higher on Leone myself. Most people would and while I admire Once Upon a Time in America for it's scope and technical aspects, I find myself at a disconnect while watching it. It is more effective in afterthought than while viewing it and it can be quite a chore to sit through the movie.

To me Eyes Wide Shut is a great film about jealousy, temptation, infidelity, power circles and paranoia and all brilliantly filmed by Kubrick.

A Passage to India (David Lean) Once Upon a Time in America (Sergio Leone) ^^^ ...Are high watermarks in any career at any stage IMO.

Seen precious few of those:
An Autumn Afternoon (Yasujirô Ozu) - 9/10 Eyes Wide Shut (Stanley Kubrick) - 8/10 The Sacrifice (Andrei Tarkovsky) - 8/10 Once Upon a Time in America (Sergio Leone) - 8/10
May have seen The Interpreter and Funny Farm, but don't recall much about them
Most interested in the Melville and Kurosawa of the ones I've not seen

Thinking for yourself is a great thing.

Eyes Wide Shut - 10/10 Once Upon a Time in America - 9/10 Sleuth - 8.5/10 Before the Devil Knows You're Dead - 8/10 Madadayo - 7.5/10 Un Flic - 7.5/10 Charlie Wilson's War - 7.5/10 Family Plot - 7/10 The Sacrifice - 7/10 The Last Tycoon - 7/10 Scream 4 - 7/10 Un Flic is a great choice, I think you’re rating is spot on. I love the film but the one issue I have with it is that dang helicopter sequence. Why did Melville concentrate on that so much? It was obviously done under an extreme budget but it would have been passable if it was just done briefly but Melville keeps that model in the camera for way too long. I don’t usually let that kind of thing get to me but wow he must have really owed his modelers something.

The fact that he managed to make it work, despite being obvious models is a testament to his visual talent.

I had no reason to believe he intended it to be his last film, though he usually takes a long time in between movies and he was 70.
