www.yahoo.com/entertainment/james-cameron-avatar-poised-reclaim-202257099.htmlWell, that didn’t take too long. About 18 months after Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame assailed to become the top grossing moving of all-time at the worldwide box office with $2,789.2 billion in July 2019, word is that James Cameron’s Avatar, which the Russo Brothers-directed Marvel movie defeated, will once again bounce back to reclaim that title. Avatar was re-released in China over the weekend, the country experiencing a massive boom at the B.O. post Covid there, and made $3.5M in the No. 1 spot on Friday or Rmb22.5M. That result puts the PRC gross for Avatar at an estimated $209.9M. Nancy Tartaglione informs me that currently on Saturday in China, Avatar has reached $5.8M in its running weekend total. She first told you about how Avatar pre-sales were doing this weekend. Heading into Avatar’s re-release this weekend, Avengers: Endgame stood at $858.37M domestic, $1.939 billion overseas for a total $2.797 billion total. Avatar‘s grosses stood at $760.5M, $2.029 billion foreign and $2.789 worldwide. Avatar beat out Jim Cameron’s 1997 Titanic, the former global box office champ, after being released in 2009 and held that titles for ten years until Avengers: Endgame came along. Marvel Boss Kevin Feige heralded the news in Hall H during the studio’s panel at Comic-Con in July 2019. Cameron has been working busily on the sequels, returning to production last May in New Zealand on part 2 as Covid cases calmed there. Disney has scheduled Avatar 2 for Dec. 16, 2022; part 3 for Dec. 20, 2024; part 4 for Dec. 18, 2026; and part five for Dec. 22, 2028.

The rivalry and comparisons that people use to demean the Avengers or Marvel, MCU when comparing them with Avatar is just too braindead to be believed.

Cameron's movie was among a short list of historically popular blockbuster titles China's Film Bureau requested for rerelease in March, when China's cinemas were attempting a staged reopening as the country began to get a handle on local spread of the novel coronavirus.

Oh yeah...let's make decisions based on what Chinese audiences watch.
Fuck you globalism.

Avatar is famous for making 3D a thing. It's story and characters are weak. I think it's jumping the gun to say it's going to make billions on its release.

Avatar 2 won't have a gimmick to fall back on and will have to rely on actually being a good movie.

Avatar is an especially nostalgic Hollywood title for Chinese millennials. The movie was among the first wave of Hollywood blockbusters to sweep the country as it was entering its high-growth box office boom era of the late aughts — and Avatar became the biggest sensation of them all. The film opened on a bitterly cold Monday in Beijing in January 2009, instantly setting a new record for biggest opening ever in China on a weekday. The Hollywood Reporter's Beijing correspondent at the time wrote of Chinese cinema-goers lined up outside theaters in foot-deep snow, waiting to get a glimpse of Cameron's 3D vision of Pandora. The film was so popular there that Cameron even considered co-producing his Avatar sequels in China.
Avatar topped out at $202.6 million, an astonishing sum for the China market then, when it was still trailing Japan as the third-biggest theatrical film territory (today, it is the world's largest). It took four years and the construction of thousands more cinemas in China for Avatar's record to fall to Stephen Chow's Journey to the West, which brought in $215 million in 2013.
On Wednesday, a video message of Cameron confirming Avatar's return and thanking Chinese fans of the film was posted to social media in China. "I'm so pleased you get to return to the world of Pandora and relive its wonders," he said.

The full three-day frame in the Middle Kingdom is estimated at $21.1M, also giving the sci-fi epic bragging rights to being the weekend’s global and international box office leader. The overseas gross is now an estimated $2,050.3M with $2,810.8M worldwide.
Avatar was originally released in China in January 2010 and made $203M, a huge sum at the time before the market’s exponential expansion. That the current weekend generated such activity — particularly given authorities decided to release it with only a few days’ advance notice — bodes well for the continued current run as well as the upcoming sequels which Disney has scheduled beginning with Avatar 2 in Decembwr 2022.
The current China re-release represents the highest reissue opening weekend in the market since movie theaters returned last July. While Friday’s gross was $3.5M, Saturday jumped a massive 261% with Sunday dipping just 2% from there. Avatar currently leads pre-sales in China through next Thursday. Maoyan is predicting an RMB 398.2M ($61.2M) run for the reissue, which would bring it close to Tenet’s China gross last year.
In IMAX, Avatar grossed $6.2M, accounting for 30% of the nationwide weekend from only 1% of screens (nine of the top 10 cinemas showing the movie were IMAX locations). This extends Avatar’s lead as IMAX’s biggest movie ever with $249.5M. Back in 2010, the IMAX 3D release of Avatar made $24M from 14 China screens.
IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond noted today, “Avatar changed everything for IMAX — catapulting our brand into the stratosphere and putting us on the map in China — and we’re grateful to help James, Jon (Landau), and this watershed film further cement their place in cinematic history. Yet again, Chinese moviegoers are demonstrating the pent-up demand for theatrical blockbusters that awaits cinemas around the world as they reopen, and IMAX continues help lead the recovery of the global movie business.
