Gert Fröbe (Goldfinger, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) was born in Saxony, not far from modern-day Czechia, in 1913. Although he originally trained as a classical violinist, he switched to theater in his teens and worked in Kabarett in his early years.
At age 16, Fröbe joined the Nazi Party in 1929.
When it was reported that Fröbe had been a Nazi, after an interview he had given to a newspaper in 1965, Israel banned "Goldfinger" and all the other films he had performed in. However, he was able to document that he had voluntarily resigned from the Nazi Party two years before the outbreak of the War and that, after he had been conscripted into the German Army, he had been sent to the Russian Front as punishment for helping distribute anti-Nazi leaflets. A Jewish man also confirmed to the Israeli government that Fröbe had helped hide the man and his mother from the Nazis, probably helping to save their lives. After that, the ban on his films was lifted.
(Incidentally, according to his Wikipedia bio, he was married to 5 different women.)

In IS PARIS BURNING -- Gert comes off as nearly sympathetic while portraying the German general who ignores Hitler's order to light up the 'City of Light.'

Probably plenty of people had a similar journey during the Nazi years. It’s why I am so uncomfortable about the current trend of discrediting people for racist , sexist etc things they said as teenagers. I would hate to go bail for every bad thing I said and did before college. It is fair to ask about anything on the public record and people really need to understand tgat if it is on the internet it is fair game. But people change , often a lot, between 16 and 25 .
I am glad Frob was able to have his whole story told. Stories about change, about turning around, about redemption are important. As BUGSEY Siegel says, everyone needs a fresh start sometimes.
