So far, I've only seen season 1, and episode 1 of season 2.
I think the production values, cinematography, acting, and dialogue are good. And apparently the show stays close to actual history. But I think lead actress is written and portrayed poorly.
She's headstrong, and disobedient in the 1700s. But she's obedient and subservient in the 1900s. When women had more rights, liberties and freedoms.
In the 1700s she refuses to follow orders or bite her tongue. She keeps getting told what to do, agrees, disobeys, getting herself and others in danger. I believe a woman acting like that in the 1700s, especially in such a violent atmosphere, would have been raped and murdered before the end of season 1.
In episode 1 of season 2, she tells her husband she is pregnant with another man's child. Her husband in the 1900s reacts by threatening her with violence, then smashing up the contents of a shop, talking with a priest, and finally telling his wife he's reached a decision with conditions. He never once asks her what she thinks, feels or wants to do. And apparently she's fine with that.
But when her husband in the 1700s wants to punish her for disobeying orders and putting the whole clan --- which saved her life, took her in, and took care of her --- in danger, she threatens him with violence. (And I don't think she ever thanked McDougal for rescuing her from the evil Capt. Jack the first time.)
Why would a Scottish clan be so willing to trust, take care of, and continually rescue an unappreciative English woman who keeps disobeying orders and putting them at risk, when they are at war with England?
I found it interesting the lead actress returning to her 1900s husband, and them moving to America to start a new life. I was annoyed when they immediately went back to her 1700s husband.
I thought it was ridiculously tiresome, and somewhat unbelievable, in season 1 the constant getting caught by the redcoats, escape from the redcoats, arrested by the redcoats, escape from the redcoats, etc.
I found the rape scenes in episode 16 of season 1 uncomfortable and unnecessary. (I almost turned it off.) But I guess some people like that.
Have you seen it?
What did you think?
