Frankenstein 1931 - While Dracula I'd say is arguably more famous across mediums, Frankenstein is for me the more cinematic & this movie in particular for the genre its populism. Psycho 1960 - Not sure much is needed to be said other than this seemed to pave the mainstream way forever more of Horror, not least the slasher thrills. The Exorcist 1973 - Has there or will there ever be such another adult drama of a Horror classic? Its legacy cannot be dethroned for me anytime soon. Jaws 1975 - I've come around on this as Horror, even though the 2nd act is pretty rousing. End of the day, it's a killing menace to an entire town (seaside), & not all Horror need be darkened rooms &/or crazed persons of interest. My #4 all-time movie.

(Halloween 1978) for slashers (Jaws) for Animal attack (Saw) for torture genre (Silence of the lambs) for psychological horror.
some people may say silence of the lambs is not a horror movie, but I remember as a kid going into the horror section of the video store I remember seeing that damn cover with the moth over the girl's mouth every time I went in there.

Psycho...Hitchcock is a legend and his most notable contribution if this film. It sets a lot of standards imo.
Halloween...Another milestone...the amount of trickle down inspiration this film has had, and its stands the test of time more than most.
Night of the Living Dead...Romero invented this type of zombie...which has since come to define the term. Not to mention the gore is on point.
The Exorcist...I wish i was alive to witness the theatres...which apparently had people passing out and vomiting due to how extreme the subject matter was at the time. Id have loved it.
P.S. The only one of these 4 that are in my top 5 is Halloween...but you have to acknowledge the greatness that paved the way.

They cross genres but certain aspects and especially certain scenes reek of horror.
