still an ensemble, ma rainey is an ensemble even if Boseman and Davis feel more relevant, Same with One Night. The definition of Ensemble: "a group of items viewed as a whole rather than individually." The poster for Judas: I see two actors' names and faces on here and none of the others you mentioned. You are objectivity wrong. And if we take your logic to it's natural conclusion, every movie is an ensemble unless it only has one actor or everyone else sucks. Ma Rainey has Boseman and Davis on the poster, but non of Turman, Domingo, or Potts, Page, or Coyne, whats your point?.

Hell, Da 5 Bloods has all four actors on the poster, but they still nominated Lindo in Leading, despite it being an ensemble.

I don't buy into it's politics, but at the risk of sounding like Scorsese. It's not cinema ...it's a lame prank show. I am just stating, it clearly is having a pretty huge political/social large effect regarding how the whole film attacks and portrays its figures, plus Cohen is working the circuit as well. True, I was just genuinely surprised it was nominated. Good luck to him...I guess

That Boseman and Davis are the leads and the others aren't. still an ensemble... Not in my opinion. Not in the opinion of whoever submitted it for Awards or made the posters. Not even in your opinion since you agree their characters are given more importance than the others. It's not even a good comparison. How are the casts anything alike? Plemmons doesn't have nearly as big a role as the the third biggest character in Ma Rainey, and guys like Sheen literally only have like three scenes.

Worse than Jamie Fox for Collateral? That at least follows the age old tradition of having two leads and putting the lesser known (or less showy) one in Supporting. The only sense Stanfield makes is if you consider Kaluuya the Lead but he's also Supporting. So neither Judas nor the Black Messiah are the main character in Judas and the Black Messiah. Apparently it's like an ensemble piece... of two people. With Ordinary People I figured it was sort of the same thing. That Sutherland was campaigning in lead because he was famous and the newcomer was campaigned in supporting. The biggest category fraud I have ever seen is Richard Burton in My Cousin Rachel and nothing else even comes close. He is in every scene and there is no co-lead at all. The only other character that has a significant amount of screentime is Olivia de Havilland.

Spacey in Usual Suspects is pretty big, its a movie from his perspective, whose he supporting? even Byrnes feels ancillary.

I have always felt Gabriel Byrne is the most prominent character, until the twist. My opinion could change if I re-watch it. The fact that it is often debated, tells me it isn't cut and dry.

I'm happy to see Glenn Close receive her 8th Oscar nomination. Al Pacino won on his 8th nomination from 9. Geraldine Page won on her 8th nomination.
On the other hand, Peter O'Toole never won from 8 nominations, nor Richard Burton from 7.
After Close, Burton and O'Toole, only Amy Adams hasn't won from 6 nominations, as well as Deborah Kerr and Thelma Ritter who are no longer with us.
Will it be a first win for Close come Oscar night? Or will it be another case of "Close, but no cigar" for the 'Sunset Boulevard' musical star, a la William Holden in 'Stalag 17' (1953)?
The Best Supporting Actress nomination for Maria Bakalov will be heartily celebrated in Bulgaria which is terrific.

Also first presumable actress from Bulgaria nominated.

That'd be my guess - I can't personally think of any Bulgarian-born performer who's been nominated previously, though in old Hollywood there were many immigrants from Europe.
