Re WHO ELSE? still few contenders - was struck last time about how vulgar Judy/Kim first appears... essential to Jimmy, her... and us ...... willing her to rebrand as Madeleine 2. Original choice Vera Miles simply not interesting enough for me. Grace could do Madeleine but not Judy. Ditto Eva Marie. My girl Carroll Baker could certainly do vulgar but lacks the remote quality Madeleine requires. Lee Remick not established enough but could do both I reckon. Martha Hyer?

but I can't help thinking any apology should be offered to Herrmann. I assuming he would be unhappy about it. From what I read, he picked and chose what to score and expected total control over the soundtrack.
It's not like taking a bit of Psycho and using it in a joke fashion.
Re-Animator used music clearly inspired by Psycho but I guess no one cared.

timshelboy Martha Hyer might have worked - interesting! How about Jean Simmons? Simmons would work for me - she's classy enough for Madeleine and some of her early work included a few low born hussies (including one she got no dialogue to work with BLACK NARCISSUS). And she could do blonde if we decide that a must (I think it is) I've always thought Hyer never got her due ....SOME CAME RUNNIBG demonstrated she could handle a major role in a big movie...

SUSAN hayward? Joanne Woodward? For sure Lee Remick I did think of Joanne - she could play a mean slattern for sure and could scrub up well when required. I enjoy Susan but too old (for the part if not Jimmy!) and more importantly not much enigma with Susan. Claire Bloom popped up in my thoughts. I'd never say she was vulgar exactly, and one usually thinks of her as occupying the upper social brackets but she was stunning as the febrile nympho in THE CHAPMAN REPORT and played a few ordinary working girls (THE MAN BETWEEN). Can't ever recall her as blonde. And she could be very stylish (THE HAUNTING, BRIDESHEAD)

Re-Animator is freaking awesome so maybe that had something to do with it.

Kind of like when Curtis famously said that kissing Marilyn Monroe was "like kissing Hitler"...but then many years later, when no one else around at the time was still living, claimed that he and Monroe were actually having a torrid love affair and she was pregnant with his baby. Novak lost most of her credibility after that statement about the music from The Artist (which Herrmann had "ripped off" from Wagner to begin with). She lost any "credibility" she ever had when she made THE LEGEND OF LYLAH CLARE".

Well I'd say it's a guilty pleasure for sure .... if you like Novak or thought BABY JANE was a comedy I'd say give it a whirl....but agreed it was the final nail in the coffin of her star run....the next year she got billed below Zero Mostel in a footling "comedy" and then it was a 4 year gap before replacing Hayworth in a brit horror anthology where she got to eat her screen daughter... and TV gig opposite - Guess who?- Tony "Can I freshen that up for you?" Curtis in THIRD GIRL FROM THE LEFT. It makes a great double bill with FEDORA (which I genuinely think a neglected masterwork) .... an outre Hollywood on Hollywood double bill with multiple personalities, assumed identities, and flashbacks galore and Hildegarde Knef as both Lylah's Germanic voice in LYLAH and in person in a magnificent role as the Countess with a secret in the Wilder. There was a one hour TV original LYLAH a few years before with Tuesday Weld directed by F Schaffner ...ionce thought "lost"... now on YOUTUBE. if you want to compare Lylah discusses her horticultural aspirations with the new gardner FEDORA - Hildegarde's finest hour?
