I always saw Welles as supporting, Heston would be the lead based upon it centering around his character, I currently have Welles supporting, he even has less screen time as well. I agree. Welles' steals the show and his performance proves far more memorable, but ultimately, he emerges as the villain. Certainly, Heston constitutes the conventional protagonist and the Academy likely would have regarded him that way. Forest Whitaker won lead gong for LAST KING OF SCOTLAND (top billing and title role* - Idi Amin) - pretty sure he was the villain there....and Charlize in MONSTER lead win was no girl next door. Not sure characters moral compass a major factor in lead/support debate - but agreed Heston is protagonist. * EDIT - thinking about it title role irrelevant eg REBECCA, CHASING AMY, HARVEY etc and lines of dialogue questionable measure (didn't McQueen demand his INFERNO lines be augmented to same as Newmans?) as that would make Dorothy McGuire in SPIRAL STAIRCASE a mere bit player, and if we included narration could mean that Woody was the lead in RADIO DAYS even though he never appears onscreen

So much ambiguity regarding lead and supporting.
Just a few comments.
The Big Country is my favourite Heston performance. He was unparalleled at playing a larger than life hero but I prefer his flawed characters (The War Lord and Major Dundee being just 2 other examples).
Separate Tables is a true ensemble piece so are they all leads or all supporting? I'm inclined to Niven being supporting.
Burl Ives is a worthy winner - but for which of his 2 great performances in this year? I think the oscars got this one right.

It's how I usually measure ensembles, unless a certain character has a defined arc, everyone is supporting, IE: Short cuts, Glengarry Glenn Ross etc.
