Who here has seen this movie?
It is a remake, but also clearly ripping-off or attempting to parody Indiana Jones and it isn't good at all. It even stars Jonathan Rhys-Davies as one of the villains and Jerry Goldsmith's score is copying John Williams' Indiana Jones score.
It might have been fun if it was better made or actually funny, but it is a very lazy movie. Clearly made for the sole purpose of cashing in on the popularity of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I enjoyed it. Not sure why this gets so much hate.

I enjoyed it. Not sure why this gets so much hate. I don't hate it, but I don't like it. The movie finds some footing in the second half, but still more dumb than fun imo. There is a handful of stuff I do think is genuinely entertaining and funny about the movie though, such as the cannibals attempting to cook the main characters in a giant bowl with carrots and lettuce.

I genuinely adore this movie. For me it just comes off as a poorly made and poorly written riff on the Indiana Jones movies. Some of it is fun, but most of it is uninspired mediocrity that is more dumb than funny or charming.

Goldsmith's score is pretty good and I think it helps the movie really doesn't waste much time. Ever seen the sequel? With James Earl Jones?

I liked it. Chamberlain was having a good time but Herbet Lom steals the movie.
Sharon Stone once remarked that her contribution to these two films consisted of "a bad hairdo running through the jungle".
John Rhys-Davies was amazed that Herbert Lom had agreed to act in this film.
According to Richard Chamberlain, Sharon Stone was extremely difficult to work with to the point that many of the cast and crew didn't want to talk to her. At one point during production, crew members urinated on the bathtub in her trailer, it was only when she stepped in her milk bath that she noticed the strong odor.
According to Richard Chamberlain, when he asked about the film's budget he was told it was about $5 million. It was, he stated, "more like $2.50".

Richard Chamberlain is okay in it, but he is barely given anything to work with. He basically is just required to look good while doing stuff. I wasn't very impressed with Goldsmith's score either, but it is still is one of the better aspects of the movie. It adds an energy to the movie that is lacking in most other areas.

Herbert Lom is decent as the comedy villain, but he is wasted imo. He barely registers because the writing of everything is so generic. He sort of overcomes the script with his usual Herbert Lom Pink Panther type dumb villain act, but not enough to elevate the movie in any significant way.

I really liked it as a kid, but on a rewatch a couple of years ago (I bought the bluray) it did seem a little lazy. It's light hearted and I enjoy it enough but it could have been a lot better. The sequel with James Earl Jones is okay as well. I'd probably give both a 5 or 5.5 out of 10.
The TV version of the story with Patrick Swayze was actually pretty good in my opinion, it also has Alison Doody from Last Crusade fame in it.

Chamberlain said they planned a third movie featuring him and Quatemain’s daughter fighting Chinese villains in the Congo(?) but one of the Cannon guys died before it happened.

Something that came to mind with this thread was I remember the Chuck Norris and Lou Gosset, Jr. pseudo Indiana Jones adventure story, Firewalker. I haven't seen that one in a long time. I guess there were a lot of cash grabs after Raiders came out. I think it was a Cannon film too.

Yup, stuff like the Chamberlain movies, High Road to China, Nate and Hayes, Shanghai Surprise, Armour of God 1 and 2, Magnificent Warriors to name a few. Plus a few cheapies starring David Warbeck.
