Would such a thing even be practical? What advantage does it have over a regular forklift? If anything it's probably more expensive, slower, requires more skill to operate, and quite hazardous (you could easily trip and fall in that thing). I guess it was just an excuse to later use it to fight the Queen Alien.

I think that was the main reason. To have something look cool before the final confrontation. Also he did the same thing in Avatar. I didn't like that the military guy killed that big cat creature. Unfair fight.

You can probably lift heavier items as well as lift them higher than a typical forklift.

The general's suit looked like it had better maneuver ability than Ripley's suit anyway.

I call it a cat creature because I am too lazy to call it --whatever it was-a thanator---As a monster fight I wasn't impressed. But then, other than the FX I wasn't impressed by the movie anyway. Cameron has a "truck driving Cecil B Demille" kind of mentality. His drama can get syrupy rather quick.

In space, at that fictional time in the future, they probably put several tasks under one semi-robotic function.

The "Is there anything I can do?" exchange between Ripley and Sarge. followed by Ripley donning forklift suit and asking "Where do you want it?"

What bothered me more was the references to a bug hunt because they never explained that they had encountered aliens--they obviously had by this time--but what we don't know what a bug is--presumably not the kind found on Klendathu.
