Beloved children's book author Beverly Cleary passed away yesterday at the age of 104. I still remember reading Ramona the Pest when I was 8 (about 50 years ago) and marveling at how an adult could so accurately capture the viewpoint of a young child without being cute or condescending. She never wrote down to her audience, and kids today still love her work. Thanks for all the great books. R.I.P.

She was a big part of my childhood and got me into reading as a child. Then as I got older - I started to move towards Judy Blume.

My teacher used to read to my class the Henry Huggins book series, which was the series which led up to the Ramona Quimby series.

Oh no! Another part of my childhood dying. My favourite line from Ramona the Pest -- "Why don't you turn on the dawnzer?" "What's a dawnzer?" "A lamp silly. It gives a lee light" I laughed and I'm not even American. This still goes through my head every once in a while. I don't know how many times I read "The mouse and the motorcycle" to my younger brother!

And then Ramona's sister laughs at her, and Ramona ends up having an epic tantrum, lying on her bed and repeatedly hammering the heels of her shoes against the wall until she finally stops from sheer exhaustion. Yeah, that's exactly how I felt throughout my childhood (I wasn't allowed to throw tantrums, though), and it remains one of the best depictions of helpless frustration in any work of literature, children's or adults'.
