The American Friend (Der Amerikanische Freund) (1977) dir: Wim Wenders is a neo-noir film adapted from the 1974 novel Ripley's Game by Patricia Highsmith. Dennis Hopper plays con-man (and worse) Tom Ripley who, at auctions, bids up forged paintings he has commissioned in order to increase their value on the market. The same novel was filmed as Ripleys Game (2002) dir: Liliana Cavani with an unusually restrained John Malkovich as Ripley. It is quite good, a smoother ride for sure for those who prefer to know what the hell is going on. There have been various Tom Ripley films, all of them good, none of them definitive, but what fascinates me is the very different actors who have impersonated him, in looks, ages and styles. You could watch all of them and be well entertained, but still not know what made him tick. I guess he would have wanted it that way.

A kinda obscure one. “Trapped” (1949) directed by Richard Fleischer. Treasury agent John Hoyt springs con Lloyd Bridges from the pen hoping Lloyd can get him in tight with a counterfeiting gang. The cinematographer was Guy Roe (Behind Locked Doors, Railroaded, Armored Car Robbery).

Remade in a god-awful version in 2012 directed by Michael Hoffman, also entitled Gambit. Starring Alan Rickman and Colin Firth and with a script by the Coen Brothers you would expect a lot better than this turkey. I rented it for two dollars and cursed the rental shop afterwards. Three weeks later they closed down and the staff all lost their jobs. Warning: do not mess with me when it comes to movie recommendations (where expenditure is involved). I learned some useful voodoo from my long-term Haitian gf. I shall not dignify the 2012 version with a picture.

The Counterfeiters (2007) Die Fälscher dir: Stefan Ruzowitzky is a drama, almost a documentary, about craftsmen in a German concentration camp (Malthausen) obliged to take part in the famous Operation Bernhard, a plan to destroy the British economy by flooding the world with counterfeit white fivers, supposedly the easiest relatively high-value banknote to forge. (They could have destroyed it a lot quicker by sending the UK Boris Johnson instead of Rudolf Hess). Their work was so good that even the Bank of England could not identify them but the success of the operation was diminished by infighting between various Nazi services.

F for Fake (1973) is a documentary by Orson Welles about many aspects of fakery (not excluding himself). Now he would have made a good Tom Ripley. Acquired this a few weeks ago, but I have not watched it yet. I have to be in a very tolerant, relaxed mood to spend time with the old phoney.

Istoria mias kalpikis liras, The Counterfeit Coin (1955) Greek written and directed by Giorgos Tzavellas
A counterfeit gold sovereign links four independent tales as it passes between various hands. Four stories of human imperfection, seduction, fate, desire, and devotion inextricably interweave. Humorous, dramatic and very touching this is an excellent classic Greek film, ranking among them as one of their best …

L'Argent (1983) was Robert Bresson's last film. Based on a short story by Tolstoy, it tells the story of a forged 500-franc banknote which is knowingly passed on (like 'pass the parcel') until eventually it is in the hands of a naive recipient who does not realize it is forged, leading to tragic events. I wonder if there was any influence from the Greek movie which planetx has described above?
