I don't see it on TV much, but if you have a chance to see Lovely, Still take it. It stars Ellen Burstyn and Martin Landau, and has a devastating twist about halfway through. It is marvelous. I love this film, Dana! I'm always surprised that it hasn't gotten more praise and been seen by more people. A really wonderful, heartbreaking piece of work with beautiful performances by Landau and Burstyn.
Also love so many of the others mentioned, especially WILD STRAWBERRIES, THE WHALES OF AUGUST, AMOUR, 45 YEARS, and HARRY AND TONTO. Still need to see TOKYO STORY and LE CHAT, shame on me.
One I would add to the list is Bernard Travernier's A SUNDAY IN THE COUNTRY (1984). Its main character is an old man, often in discord with family members younger than he. But it deals with the subject of aging under those circumstances beautifully. And lune7000 , I don't know when or if the landscape of films that tell these kinds of stories will change in America. It's just so incredibly difficult to get financing for them, for reasons I've never understood and that really annoy me. The talent is willing, but the financiers are not. And because of that too many of our actors/actresses will not surrender to the aging process as the British and other countries' talents do. It's disappointing, to say the least, for them and for those who watch them.
That said, Isapop 's post about OUR SOULS AT NIGHT (2017), a good but not great film, reminded me of I'LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS (2015). Again, not a great film, but a very good and enjoyable one with a stellar ensemble cast of a certain age. Not at all on a par with the others mentioned in this thread, however. Too bad that's the case.

Nothing to do with this thread, but when reading one of your posts recently it crossed my mind that you might enjoy UNCLE FRANK (2020) Spidey. It too is very enjoyable.

Oh, yes, that looks like a very good one. Great cast, and I love the idea of the story. I'll see if I can find it. Thanks for the introduction, Jefferson.
