Scarlett Johansson Suggests Actors Stay Out of Politics, Focus on Acting
'THE OTHER STUFF IS NOT MY JOB' THE INTERNATIONAL SENSATION SCARLETT JOHANSSON SAID WHILE INTERVIEWING ABOUT THE INTERSECTION OF POLITICS AND ACTING WITH THE GENTLEWOMAN, A MAGAZINE BASED IN THE UK. "I don't think actors have obligations to have a public role in society…Some people want to, but the idea that you're obligated to because you're in the public eye is unfair. You didn't choose to be a politician, you're an actor” the popular Marvel actress said. "Your job is to reflect our experience to ourselves; your job is to be a mirror for an audience, to be able to have an empathetic experience through art. That is what your job is," the actress continued. When discussing her own political views the actress added that, "Whatever my political views are, all that stuff, I feel most successful when people can sit in a theatre or at home and disappear into a story or a performance and see pieces of themselves, or are able to connect with themselves through this experience of watching this performance or story or interaction between actors or whatever it is," "That's my job," Johansson stated, "The other stuff is not my job." Johansson has a history of being the target of cancel culture numerous times in her career for taking on roles in movies the woke mob did not deem appropriate. In 2017, the Marvel actress was accused of “whitewashing” history for taking the lead role in “Ghost In The Shell,” a Japanese anime story. Johansson is starring in the latest Marvel superhero movie, "Black Widow," which is scheduled to be released on July 9th. Do you agree with Scarlett Johansson? Should actors be making political statements for either side of the political aisle? The headline, that she "suggests actors stay out of politics", is misleading. In the article she says, "the idea that you're obligated to because you're in the public eye is unfair." That's different, and I agree that any obligation would be unfair.

She's absolutely right, politics shouldn't or at least don't have to dominate everybody's life.

I think that both people and the actors should keep in mind that there are others who are better informed when it comes to politics. Personally I think that the conservatives in the US are corrupt theocrats and don't care about society's future, denying the value of everything from science to the military while the left is going insane with cancel culture and identity politics of smaller and smaller groups.

She'll never become president of the United States with that attitude.

I agree. It’s why I became independent. Best decision I’ve ever made!!!

Acting comes first, but they shouldn't feel like they're obligated to share their opinion or that they're not allowed to voice their opinion. Sometimes, it's not a sound one but hey that's America.

I agree that actors shoulda not feel obligated to represent some political position.

It should be mandatory, however, that they moonlight as singers.
Or not.

They're actors, not political candidates. If they want to voice or promote their political views then that's their choice. They should be under no obligation - or indeed expectation - to do so.

I tend to not go on actor's individual Twitter pages if I can so I'm unaware of if they go full retard about politics or not. In my opinion I think they've cooled down on Trump's second year when he was president compared to the delusional foreseeing of mushroom clouds each Hollywood twat had wrongly gone crazy about when he was inaugurated.

She's right and I'm sure some will try to 'cancel' her again for saying something like this.

Fine, then stop criticizing Joel Osteen for refusing to shelter victims of hurricanes in his church center. He runs a church and inspires millions, but he's not Jesus.

I subscribe to the “don’t talk politics or religion at the dinner table” crowd which doesn’t seem to be a popular position nowadays. I expanded that old saying to most of my life. The subjects get to be quite dull actually, especially when we’re subjected to a non stop barrage from multiple outlets.

I agree with Johansson but not with Bridgit Gabriel who is a right-wing hater. I had to look her up to confirm but her use of terms like “woke” and “cancel culture” – two conservative created put-downs of equal rights for everyone – gave her away.
Even though I said I agree with Scarlett that actors (nor anyone else) are not OBLIGATED to be engaged with politics, they certainly may be if they wish, contrary to the point that Gabriel is trying to make.
Nothing that Gabriel says should be respected nor paid one second of attention to. To use CON terminology, she is trying to “cancel” actors’ voices.
