It's a wonder that Kolchak: The Night Stalker didn't generate high enough ratings to continue on for another season when it was on prime time on ABC. Then apparently somebody at CBS saw the potential for it to become a big hit on late-night TV. And they were right; when CBS added Kolchak to its late show line-up, the ratings went through the roof. Go figure. So then CBS would continue to periodically bring back Kolchak to their late show throughout the 1980s, and the ratings would remain strong.

I have Kolchak on DVD. Loved it. Remember the episode when his secretary was the monster? Yep, that one was Horror In The Heights. The evil spirit disguised itself as Miss Emily. Great episode.

My favorites are
The Spanish Moss Murders Horror in the Heights Zombie Vampire Chopper R.I.N.G. Werewolf
The worst is the Youth Killer.
I think it could not have lasted beyond another season. I think they had exhausted the monster of the week story--they would have benefited from an extra 15 minutes.
There were three episodes they didnt film--a mutant in a mine shaft which sounds too close to the Sentry episode--something about haunted paintings--and a female version of Jekyll Hyde "Eve of Terror" which sounds good-but I don't know what they would have done--the comic adaptation is too fragmented.
Some other ideas mentioned by fans etc:
gremlins at Chicago airport a killer puppet or clown a giant spider (an idea Dan Curtis did for a tv-movie)
I just think they would hit a road block after another few episodes because Kolchak acted like he had amnesia in a way-there was never any continuation between episodes except a couple of minor references. The show as a monster of a week format could not have lasted another season--because you would eventually be thinking what is this surge of monster activity in Chicago?
So, 2 seasons at most. I think they would have run out of steam. And if they had done the show as more serialized--with recurring story plots--ehh I don't know. I think it would have been weird to do that.
It was stupid of the network not to back the show more because the tv-movies did well and the show is still popular.

One of my favorite shows as a kid. I've read it inspired Chris Carter to make X-Files.

For a show that didnt even complete its first season--look how popular it is. But it had to do with McGavin being dissatisfied with the show too.
But I heard that in the 1990s he attended a meeting on a comic book version of it to give his creative input.
The third Kolchak movie, The Night Killers I think was the title--it would have been interesting to see what the final Matheson script looked like if he had finished it. The draft version you can read is not hopeful.
Although John Carradine's character Crossbinder is in it too.

Darren McGavin played Frank Black's father in the Millennium episode Midnight Of The Century.

Yeah I stumbled upon that episode when it aired.
I didn't watch Millennium after the first season but I recall seeing him by channel flipping. Supposedly McGavin did not want to play Kolchak on the X-Files--some say the rights were too entangled but it sounds like he did not feel the character was best served as a guest star. Because he did participate in a meeting for a comic book project in the 90s and so he was still interested in the character. I think he felt Kolchak had to be center stage, not a guest star.
