Here is the first official trailer for Space Jam 2:
My first thoughts are:
A) Jordan was surprisingly a better actor. I didn’t expect that. After “train wreck” I though LeBron had some comedy abilities. I guess it was just a good director. Why not have James just play himself. He’s trying to do these drama scenes... it’s cringe.
B) I love that the last time, MJ was saving the Looney Tunes. This time, LeBron is trying to save the entire Warner Bros. It has Flintstones, Yogi Bear, King Kong etc...
C) Another issue is, if you have access to ALL of WB, why limit yourself to just having Looney Tunes characters on your team? Why not have Superman or Green Lantern?
Looks okay and passable for a kids cartoon. But it doesn’t look like it’s anywhere in the ballpark of quality the original was. That was just iconic.
Final thought. Another reason MJ worked better than LeBron is. MJ was 6-0 in the NBA finals. He never lost. So he wasn’t going to lose the big game. LeBron has lost 5 NBA finals. He could lose this game.

Space Jam was supposed to be a kiddie version of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” in the 1990s. With basketball as a theme (because MJ and the Dream Team was all the rage in the mid 90s). Back when 25-30 million people would watch MJ play. Nowadays, the NBA finals with LeBron last year got 2 million viewers. It’s never going to be the same. The original was like lightning in a bottle. It was the right movie at the right time.

I'm curious to see what Woke Looney Tunes will be like. They probably won't be funny, but they should be interesting at least.

Yeah, the original was produced by the guy who made “Ghostbusters” that’s why Bill Murray and Larry Bird were in it. Just a fun, over the top film. I get the vibe this is going to be a “woke” SJW film with some allegory about not being controlled.

Atleast it's not a complete rehash of the first one.
The first one is a childhood favourite of mine. It certainly had charm. Many people saw due to Jordan as well, who was at the time, one the most popular athletes in the world.
It still looks fun and being fan of the original and James, I'll definitely check it out. It's unfortunate it's releasing during Covid.

It's unfair to compare with Jordan since James played the finals during a pandemic. Not James's fault.

I thought they were gonna keep Lebron a toon the entire time. I immediately thought...what’s the point of having Lebron James if he’s a cartoon?

This just looks like WB is trying to make their equivalent of that dumb Wreck it Ralph sequel. Why do we need to cram in all these WB properties?

Who seriosuly is demanding this? Wouldn't a "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" sequel make far more sense? Even with Bob Hoskins dead, I would imagine there's be still be far more interest than another Space Jam film.

The trailer seemed more interested in selling us the effects than explaining the story, but from what we saw, it felt a lot like Tron meets Ready Player One meets Hook.

Besides, Who Framed Roger Rabbit might be too spicy of a film for Disney to make a sequel to, without the sequel being seen as watered down garbage. People made a big fuss about Lola Bunny being less sexualized, but I can’t imagine Jessica Rabbit getting a pass today.

I feel like everyone involved with the film would be permanently blacklisted if they attempted to portray Jessica Rabbit today.

Part of the original movie's success was due to the Looney Tunes actually being relevant in the 90's. All the Looney Tunes characters were all over T-shirts in the 90's. Bugs playing basketball. Taz playing basketball. Tweety shirts. Marvin shirts. They were everywhere in the 90's.

I grew up in the 90s and everyone my age knew about the Looney Tunes. I doubt the majority of kids today even know who they are, much less have any interest in watching a new movie about them.

Watching the trailer reminded me of Ready Player One with the intellectual properties of Warner Bros. being involved. It looks nice, and I'm happy to see the Looney Tunes again, but it won't be in the same league as the first Space Jam.
