I was thinking probably Citizen Kane, but are there any even better examples?

I don’t know. That already had two sequels and a couple of video games.

I don’t know. That already had two sequels and a couple of video games. I was just referring to the remake part of the question. You said "sequel" OR "remake." I don't see anything wrong with a video game of Citizen Kane, besides the fact that I think that would be a very boring video game. Point being that you are asking about movies, so why bring up video games at all?

My point was that The Godfather is already something of a franchise, so I don’t know if people would be that outraged if it got remade. People would definitely be mad, but I’d assume they’d be more mad if that happened with CK.

A remake of The Godfather would be more bothersome to me than a remake of Citizen Kane and also more pointless, regardless of being a franchise.

I was speaking more broadly in terms of how film circles as a whole would respond, not necessarily what people here think. I guess I should have clarified that.

I was thinking probably Citizen Kane, but are there any even better examples? I have a question for you. Are you counting loose remakes or just direct remakes? The reason I ask is because some people have mentioned Barb Wire as a remake of Casablanca, but I don't see it that way. It is more parodying the plot than anything.

Any remake of a well renowned film will get even larger pushback than they would have before these days because we all know the main goal in remaking the film is to make it more work (see Ghostbusers 2016)

Wizard of Oz. And since a remake is in the works, nothing is sacred anymore. Everything is fair game.

Of those mentioned I think Citizen Kane would be the craziest because it was written as a movie-so there's no grounds for re-interpretation. It was entirely about Orson Welles. Someone might argue they can modernize it and maybe do some crazy experiment like putting everyone in makeup so they try match the original except modern and in color or something.

That occurred to me as well, because The Social Network is basically a remake of Citizen Kane. Since he said only direct remakes, then yeah, it'd take some balls to put out a new "Citizen Kane" when Citizen Kane is used as a metric of being GOAT (ie "Watchmen is the Citizen Kane of comic books"). A sequel would be even whackier. Some fourth generation Kane family member trying to take the New York Daily Inquirer to the internet and compete with vloggers? Ugh.

There is a scale that has to be taken into account imo. On one end would be Barb Wire and on the other end would be Psycho (1998). I think Barb Wire is just having fun using the Casablanca story in a cartoon-ish context. That is not a remake by my definition.

Why would anyone want to remake one of the most boring movies ever made?
