No TV, huh?
Well -- that rules out John Houseman.

No TV, huh? Well -- that rules out John Houseman. That would logically follow, yes.

Do Shorts count? If so, George Arliss.

Do Shorts count? If so, George Arliss. One hour and ten minutes is certainly not a short, especially in 1921. And you, jerivstetch have found that last, elusive, and CORRECT entry, to complete the list. Congratulations. You, Aussie, and Matt divined the secret to the answers. Now that everyone knows them all, I wonder if anyone else wants to have a crack at what is they, and no others, all have in common?

They all portrayed characters in subsequent films in roles that they previously won Oscars for playing.

Yes, they all won Oscars for a role they played more than once.
Interestingly (to me anyway), while nearly all of them won the Oscar the first time they played that role, Newman and Arliss both won their Oscars the second time they played the role.

Wow. Just realizing that I blundered my way into the George Arliss answer. I didn’t even notice that he played Disraeli in a film previous to his Oscar winning performance. I only saw that he played Disraeli in a 16 minute Short AFTER his win. That’s why I asked if Shorts counted. That’s what they call a Happy Accident.

Paul Newman should have won his Oscar for The Hustler--one of my favorite movies. The Hustler changed American pastime culture, and I bought my own "stick" to play straight pool in one of those new-type pool halls. For me, it was Paul Newman's best!!!! Then, of course, there was a great cast including: Jackie Gleason (Minnesota Fats) , Piper Laurie Piper (Sarah Packard) , George C. Scott (Bert Gordon), and Myron McCormick.
I liked the movie so much that I read the book after seeing the movie.
