So first of all, I really want to acknowledge the fact that it seems like you guys are NOT putting the scores of games in the thread titles anymore, and as the guy who was griping about it, I just want to say that I've noticed this and I'm very thankful that you all are making the effort. I was able to watch Man City/Leicester and the really good game featuring ManU/Brighton yesterday without knowing the result first.
I really do appreciate it, thanks.
Now my question about Manchester City. This is my first year paying attention to this sport, and it's obvious even to a newbie like me that this is a pretty special team, especially up front on offense where there are at least 7 guys that I've come to know as excellent offensive threats.
My question to you guys who have watching forever is how good is this team exactly? Are we witnessing a team for the ages, or are there other EPL teams from the past that could handle this current Man City squad?
To more experienced eyes than mine, just how great is this team in the overall "big picture"?

They are on course to do an unprecedented quadruple... Prem title, FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League.
That is pretty special if they pull it off. It's never been done before.

I was wondering about that when I heard commentators discussing that. I'm surprised that's never happened before with, say a Manchester United squad or something. The guy who really amazes me on that team is #26 Mauhza or something like that. He is REALLY fun to watch.

It might interest you to know that up until not so long ago they were a struggling club whose fans could only dream of the kind of success that their cross-city rivals were having year in year out. That all changed when the club was acquired by investors with bottomless pockets.

That all changed when the club was acquired by investors with extremely deep pockets. I was always under the impression that Man City were like the Red Sox while United were the Yankees, who were always beating down their "little brother". Interestingly enough, the Red Sox finally started winning titles once they had ownership that was willing to play hard ball like the Yankees always had done.

This is probably true but also pretty much sums up why this isn't a special team but rather a squad "fortuitously" assembled after getting very lucky with some airline sponsorship deals...

Fair enough, but how historically good is this squad? Have there been even better teams over the years that you've been watching?

Both Liverpool and Man U and even Arsenal have had teams/squads that were at least as "good" but you can't really compare different times as there are so many variables involved. Football has changed so much at the top level and so much of the physical aspect has been removed from that level that you could almost call it a non tackling version of the game played at lower levels. Apart from 2 years ago when City and Liverpool went head to head all through the season other clubs have lacked the consistency required to challenge, as indeed did City last year when Liverpool were far superior. For most football fans though, buying success leaves a bit of a hollow feeling which is why the Man United "kids" side were better imho.

Fair enough, but how historically good is this squad? Have there been even better teams over the years that you've been watching? I couldn't say in terms of how they play as I won't watch any games featuring Man City (or Chelsea), unless they are playing Liverpool, however historically there probably hasn't been a better squad. However just last season Liverpool finished 18 points clear of City, so in terms of best teams, I'm not sure. Having resources not in line with your fan base is one thing but it's a bit harder to build a great team. In terms of recent history, the greatest teams (other than arguably Liverpool but we'll need to see if they can fight back) would imo probably be the Man Utd side which peaked in the 98/99 Champions League winning season and the Arsenal Invincibles of 03/04. The style both these sides played with was incredible and I'd wager they'd both beat City at full strength. However they were both underpinned by key individuals,e.g. Keane / Viera, and if they'd lost them for any great period of time they'd probably not have beaten the current City to a title over the course of a season.
