Door Into Darkness was an Italian mystery anthology TV series made in 1973. Created by Dario Argento, this show was on for just one season and only four episodes were made. Argento hosted the show (à la Alfred Hitchcock Presents) as well as wrote and directed two episodes. Door Into Darkness is now available on Shudder, in Italian with English subtitles, and I would imagine this would be the first time for availability in North America.
I watched all four episodes, so here's the breakdown:
"The Neighbor" A young couple with a baby move into a new apartment and soon discover that the man living above them has murdered his wife. Written and directed by Argento collaborator Luigi Cozzi, this one packs a lot of suspense and has stylish visuals that can compete with any one of Argento's early gialli. Could of had a better ending, though.
"The Tram" A woman's dead body is found in a streetcar. Inspector Giordani is on the case, but he's having a difficult time trying to figure out how this woman could have been brutally killed in a streetcar full of riders without a single witness. Written and director by Argento, this whole premise is really clever, and the execution (no pun intended) is carried out quite well. When everything is finally unraveled the explanation is reasonably plausible. My favorite episode.
"The Doll" A detective and psychiatrist team up to nab a killer who escaped from an insane asylum. My least favorite episode, due to it being so dreary. There is an interesting twist at the end, but it's a real chore to sit through to get to it.
"Eyewitness" A driver comes across a dead woman on the road. After reporting it to police, the body disappears. This is the other one directed by Argento and co-written with Cozzi. Very engrossing story that gets quite intense at times, especially the grand finale. I was able to partially guess who the killer was, but there was definitely more to the twist than meets the eye.
So overall I thought Door Into Darkness was definitely a fine show. Too bad there weren't more episodes.
