There are some actors/actresses who always seem to shine, and fans can always trust, no matter what kind of movie they do or role that they take on. The key to their success is they can successfully tailor their performance to match the character, as well as the kind of movie they're doing, because they successfully know what they're getting into. So whether they're doing a dumb comedy, a scary horror film, a mindless action movie, a dramatic western, an intelligent sci-fi movie, a campy musical, etc., the actor/actress always seems to "understands the assignment", and is worth watching regardless of the movie's quality, because they know just how to approach their role and the movie itself. Who are some actors/actresses who always seem to "understand the assignment"? www.themarysue.com/assignment-twitter-meme/www.msn.com/en-us/movies/news/these-actors-definitely-understood-the-assignment/ar-BB1fmgxW?ocid=msedgdhp

Yeah, you wanted to spice things up a bit on here by not asking the typical "who is your favourite actor?" Which is basically what you're still asking, yeah I hear ya.

Yeah, you wanted to spice things up a bit on here by not asking the typical "who is your favourite actor?" Which is basically what you're still asking, yeah I hear ya. I don't think this is a "Who's your favorite actor?" thread. Someone's favorite actor might have such distinctive qualities as to be ill fitted for certain projects. I think the OP is describing the sort of actor that makes me think of John Lithgow, for instance.

The classic era actor/star who has usually been my icon. I don't think he has ever sleepwalked through a movie in spite of all the cheap programmers he was forced to make during the '30s. He was always looking for his chance to break out so became Warner's most reliable contract player. He always gave it all.

Peter Cushing That's the first one I thought of.

Gene Hackman is a master class of acting. Even if the film is subpar, he brings it. He almost made “The Quick and the Dead” really good. Just from his performance.

Almost anyone who is a "character actor" or a "method actor" neatly fits the criteria. Actors that come to mind are Harry Dean Stanton, M. Emmet Walsh, Joaquin Phoenix, Christian Bale, Frances McDormand, Adam Driver, Robert Shaw, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rod Steiger, John Hurt, and Gary Oldman.
