Really wasn’t feeling this one. Never particularly laugh out loud funny. Much of Chevy Chase’s lines fall flat, as well. Seems little more than an excuse to have him in goofy disguises and identify himself as Ted Nugent, Don Corleone, Harry S. Truman, etc...

Chevy Chase has said this is his favorite of all the movies he has done.

I always liked it but yeah it’s not a movie that has you rolling on the floor or anything from laughter. It does have some snappy lines in though that Chase was pretty famous for (his delivery).

I don't think it was really intended to be a laugh-out-loud kind of movie like Animal House or Caddyshack or something. I think it was intended more as sort of a satiric mystery film and of course an adaptation of the book.

Love that flick. The sequel is terrible, though.

I really liked the first movie. The second one isn’t as good but it still made me laugh a few times.

Been a long time since I've seen it, but I liked it quite a bit when it was released.

It reminded me a bit of some old Bob Hope movies. Just doing one-liners and pratfalls get's tiresome after some time. By attaching a crime or monster story, where those actors takes their roles for real and plays the dangers for real, comedy can work very well as a counterpart, when the dangers are real and not a parody. Joe Don Baker's characters brutality for example.
Not sure if that made any sense.
My views of Fletch 1985 are positive.

Have you seen The Ghost Breakers?

Fletch is an 80s classic and one of Chase's best roles. It's sardonic humor fits Chase's style well. Great score by Harold Faltermeyer.
The sequel is decent as well.

A perfect role for Chevy, and the Bob Hope comparison seems spot on, but truthfully one of my least favorite films of his.
I prefer Caddyshack, the Vacation movies, Three Amigos, etc.
